It is not one of those perfect holiday homes renovated just for that purpose. This is a home belonging to a young working family with the dream of slowly rebuilding it for themselves,as and when they have the funds.
Although it is perfectly habitable and spacious with all amenities, it is not luxury but rather authentically rustic. It is offered for rent to help with the finances and also to afford others who love nature the opportunity of experiencing this as one will never find it anywhere else.
The location is idyllic, lying between the famous and unusual town of Sortelha and the home of Torre cheese, Sabugal, both of which have castles.
To get to the property one has to be prepared to drive a good dirt track for 1.7km from the tarred road but isn“t this exactly what we imagine being away from the noise and bustle would mean...hidden away down some inconspicuous and obscure track?
The south facing property extends over 14ha of land all of which one may use. Combined with spectacular views there are 7 fish-filled lakes, hills with giant weird boulders typical of the area and forested areas which have paths winding in and out where on can walk endless miles accompanied by the owners 3 curious and friendly young horses which live there and roam wild.
Around the house there is a garden area which is pretty too.
The living accommodation for the moment comprises of only the one stone house which can sleep up to 9 people. The owner has built another adjoining rock house which is stunningly unusual but needs finishing.
The accommodation comprises of a giant open-plan kitchen / dining room / lounge with all furniture, a fridge, crockery, cutlery and pots and pans. This is all basic ware but nevertheless all that one needs.
The fantastic bathroom with Jacuzzi is also on this floor. Words cannot adequately describe the creativity with which this space was dressed and wrapped around the giant boulder which forms one of its walls. Even if just to see that, you should come to view this place!
Upstairs under the roof is the sleeping space with one private double bedroom having a mirror-faced wardrobe and the remaining area forming a common/shared sleeping space with 2 double beds and some single mattresses for bigger groups. Again, all the bedding is there but basic, and you are asked to make you own beds.
So in fact, this is just like a home in nature away from home on the city. Real rural life means some healthy work to be done.
For those who are able to drag themselves away from the total relaxation and peace to seek some diversion there is much to see in the immediate area.
Sortelha is a few kilometres away. A breathtaking place perched high up and overlooking all that surrounds it, with its balancing pancake boulders and most magnificent castle. Definitely not to be missed of you want to gaze in amazement at natures artistry and sculptures
Sabugal a lovely quaint cobbled city along the river Coa and home of the famous Torre cheese Again a very beautiful castle!
Serra da Estrela, Portugal's highest mountain range where you can go skiing. Lovely craft shops too so don't forget your purse or you will hate yourself. Only 30km to drive.
The Malcata Nature Reserve and mountains with its charming reservoir is the only place in Portugal where the lynx is still found. Sparsely populated is has mountains dotted with olive and almond trees, a pretty sight indeed and one could soon become lonely and hoping to meet another human being, it is so tranquil.
Bendada, an end-of-the-world village lying against a mountain which is made of quartz and other beautiful semi-precious stones. One can even find stalagmites and -tites lying around its environs for the picking up. Bring a small hammer and a drawstring bag for your treasure hunt
Covilha and Guarda, two of Portugal's characteristic cities which both merit a visit.
Whatever you decide to do, this will be a holiday different to any other! Where will you find a 14ha farm to call your own for a while. Why not try it? You might love it so much that you decide to buy your own.
