OVERVIEW

La frogerie is a 160 year old farmhouse, situated in a small hamlet of 4 houses, two miles from the village of Martigne-Ferchaud. The area is known as “la pay de la roches aux fees” (Fairies Rock Country) located in Haute-Bretagne at the doorway to Brittany. The house is in a very quiet rural location between Rennes and Nantes. It stands in an acre of ground with beautiful views across the fields and countryside beyond. La Frogerie offers the ideal location for a peaceful and restful holiday but with plenty in the area for the more active. La frogerie has 2 bedrooms that sleep a maximum of 4 adults, 2 children and a baby. It is a traditional stone building or longerie with all the windows facing south to the front of the house. The other end of the property, out of shot of this photograph, contains old animal stalls. All accommodation is on the ground floor with no steps or stairs and therefore would suit clients with limited mobility. Bear in mind that the house is in the countryside so you will see mice, lizards, frogs and spiders etc. We once found a barn owl in the attic!

LOCATION & AREA

The house is conveniently situated in Ille-et-Vilaine (35) but on the borders of 3 other departments or counties, Maine et Loire (49), Mayenne (53), Loire Atlantique (44). It is a great location for touring the north and south areas of Brittany and the Loire Valley. The roads in the area are very quiet making touring a pleasure.

The nearest village of Martigne-Ferchaud has two good supermarkets, banks, post office, bakers, butchers and deli. There are a number of small bars and restaurants (opening times at owner's discretion!). There is also a lake with a small man made beach.

The area is ideal for cycling and walking in the quiet country lanes around the house. There are number of circular walks and cycle routes conveniently signposted. Fishing, golf, horse riding, karting and horse-racing can all be found in the area.

In August the village comes alive for the annual Etincelles Aquatiques. A pyrotechnical extravaganza with over 250 actors and 950 volunteers.

Why not visit our favourite restaurant at la roche aux fees. There are many other great restaurants in the area whatever your budget or taste.

A colourful market can be found at Chateaubriant (15K) on Wednesdays where you can buy fresh local produce. Chateaubriant has the 3rd largest cattle market in France. The town is steeped in history with plenty of shops, bars and restaurants. The very ancient Bere Fair is held here on the second weekend of September. The fair is over 950 years old. There is a green cycle route from Rouge to Chateaubriant which apparently runs along a old train track. It is 13KM long and with no motor vehicles so great for the little ones.

To the south of Chateaubriant is Grand Reservoir de Voireau (30 mins by car). Here is a safe man-made beach with pedaloes, swimming, café, showers, changing rooms, wind-surfing and sailing. Another lake beach (picture right) can be found at Pouance (16 KM). This is a little closer to the house and also has a small beach café, showers, playground, and swimming with waters sports during high season.

For children there is the Domaine de la Petite Couere at Segre. It has a motor museum, old French village, picnic areas and animals. An open air swimming pool can be found at Nozay. Mini golf and 10 pin bowling can be found in Chateaubriant.

Rennes (46 KM), to the north and the capital of Brittany is a city of art and history. It boasts a magnificent architectural heritage where the classical rubs shoulders with the medieval.

Nantes (84 KM) is to the south on the River Loire, home to Muscadet, Rose d’Anjou and other fine wines.

Also within a short driving distance are Vitre (38 KM), Angers (82 KM), Redon (72 KM) and Fougeres (70 KM).

Further afield are St Malo - 118 KM, Mont-St-Michel – 118 KM, La Baule – 116 KM, Golfe du Morbihan and the Chateaux of the Loire.

La frogerie offers a peaceful location for a holiday as active or inactive as you wish!

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

We speak: French, English
Guestbook: The weather has been excellent if not too hot at over 30 most days. The countryside and peace are both beautiful and relaxing and the BBQ an essential part of our holiday.Places well worth a visit – Zoo at La Fleche, great day for kids and adults. Vitre:- great chateau and wonderful bars to while away a few hours. La Baule:– huge long sandy beach. The forest nearby is great for bike riding and a nice walk around the country roads lets you see the wildlife of the area.Helen, Adam, Kayla, Chris and Becky – June 2005 {linebreak}{linebreak} We bought bikes and cycled most days. Managed to see a lot of the countryside and found many quiet village bars for necessary refreshments! Managed to miss the markets wherever we went but have become experts in how to dismantle stalls and pack unsold wares into white vans. La Guerche has particularly good vantage points with bars dotted round the square. Madame Oeuf (actually Madam Gendros, the neighbour) must have thought us mad on our bikes each day. She just kept smiling and waving. Thanks again for a lovely time, we will be back, if allowed. Lizzie and John – July 2005 {linebreak}{linebreak} La Frogerie has proved a great base to explore this part of Brittany. Weather has been good. We would recommend the beaches at La Baule and Dinard, exploring Dinan then dine down by the river at a nice family run pizzeria, restaurants in Vitre. Guy, Luke and Maria – July 2005 {linebreak} {linebreak} We had a lovely stay here at la frogerie. It rained on Sunday the whole day and then it has been sunny and we spent most of or time at La Baule. We went to Nantes and we had a really great time there. It is great for shops. We would recommend L’Auberge de Brettonne in Chateaubriant and La Roche aux Fee in Esse. We like the peace and quiet here. The Kenways - May 2005 {linebreak}{linebreak} Firstly, just a note to say that La Frogerie exceeded all our expectations. The cottage was very fairly, if modestly, described on the website but it was a absolute delight to spend the week here breakfasting on pain au chocolat and dining on quiche and salad in the fantastic fresh air. All in all, an amazing week of snoozing, laughing, drinking and overeating and giving a one year old a thoroughly memorable first holiday. {linebreak}{linebreak} Kate, Derek, Nick, Cathy and Masie (1 yr) - July 2004 A very peaceful and enjoyable week with hot sunny weather for most of the time. Would recommend a visit to Fougeres, beautiful medieval castle and fort. Also worth a visit is Poelon d’Or in Chateaubriant, food is superb but not cheap. Great wine, fantastic stars and remember to duck when you go into the kitchen. David and Linda - August 2004 {linebreak}{linebreak} La Frogerie is a beautifully well maintained clean property. Surrounded by marvellous countryside. There is an amazing wood burning fire/stove in the living room unfortunately we did not get to use it as the temperatures were high while we were there. The house exceeded our expectations by a long way. I would highly recommend this property for a nice relaxing holiday. Helen and family - 12-25th June 2005 {linebreak}{linebreak} Have found that the people round here are generally very friendly and have had no difficulty with French and being encouraged to use it. Highlights of our stay have been Fontevraud L’Abbe, quite a drive but truly worth while especially if you get an English guide. The drive from Saumur along the Loire was also a bonus. Mont St Michel –go later, it’s heaving in the afternoon. Ian, Jackie, and Rosie (7 yrs) – August 2004 {linebreak}{linebreak} This is the place for peace and quiet! We were fortunate with the weather – mostly sunny, but often a cold wind. The best windbreak we found was to sit in front of the garage doors. Very comfortable stay, well-equipped gite, loved the log fire, essential at this time of year. Patrick and Eileen – end September 2004 I am having lots of fun here and it is very different to were [sic} we live back home in London. I had my birthday here. It is very comfortable in the bed. I'm having a great time hear [sic] in France at the beach swimming around. I am very happy here. Kate (age 7) - London - August 2003 2003 - The cottage is absolutely great, just what we wanted and hopefully we will be back next year. 2005 – Once again another great week at la Frogerie. Le Poelon d’or is a must for food and service. We also found another restaurant at Pouance, La Porte Angeine. Margaret, Gordon and David - June 2003, June 2004, June 2005 The forest just a mile from the doorstep provided interesting and varied runs, walks and bike rides bearing in mind the incredible temps. Loved it all. David from London - August 2003 The great thing about turning up when it's totally dark is what awaits you in the morning. What a sight! Fields as far as the eye can see. Nothing to be heard but the hum of a tractor in the distance and birds singing. The birds are so laid back they don't start up in the morning until they have had a good lay-in. La frogerie is a beautiful building with a big welcome. We did the occasional day trip but found the comfort of the old farmhouse as the best place to be. Phil, Inge, Molly and Ida from London - May 1999 We had a wonderful week, very peaceful and lots of room for the children to play outside. Cottage very comfortable and neighbours very friendly. May 2003 AND AGAIN ….We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and are sad to be leaving. Seen two lizards and I have caught 8 grasshoppers before I released them. Pierre the stick insect was on the door for a whole day. Nick (9 years) with Sue, Paul and Laura – August 2004 Really enjoyable and relaxing stay. Surrounding countryside is beautiful for walks etc and local towns such as Vitre, Martigne Ferchaud and Chateaubriant etc very nice. Rob and Toni - June 1999 What a wonderful peaceful location. Only the birds to listen to - no traffic etc. Helen, Steve, Sarah and Aimee - July 2003 This is a great little house, including the mouse, that gave us a fright, in the middle of the night. Most days it stayed dry, with fluffy clouds in a blue sky, when the weather was dire, we came home to light the fire, The food was just fine, we drank bottles of wine, we've all put on weight, the holiday was great. Beryl and John, Richard and Jody from Shoreham-by-sea - September 2000. PS The gite is very well equipped but the men couldn't find the dishwasher, so we showed them the rubber gloves - September 2000 We had good weather and the cottage was a lovely cool retreat. We travelled quite widely and had fun and interesting days at La Baule, Vitre and Fleche Zoos and much more. We also made good use of the unexpected library of books and store of games. A very enjoyable and restful holiday Totty and Cole - September 1999 At first I found the cottage to be too dark and old fashioned but quickly came to appreciate the comfortable bed and chairs. Angela - August 1999 Oh so laid back, if you want to catch up on your sleep this is the place. Places to visit, Vitre, La Baule and just about anywhere. Reminiscent of Ireland, without the rain, really friendly Folk. The Kelly's - June 2001
