Ankara Attractions

Ankara Shopping

Cikrikcilar Yokusu - Located near Ulus, this is not a haven for tourists and you are less likely to be hassled here. But you are still welcome to haggle with the owners over the traditional clothes and linens.

Bakircilar Carsisi - This is at the end of Cikrikcilar Yokusu and is more popular with visitors and as such they can't mistake the tourist. (The ones clean shaven) Great place to buy the gift for someone at home and try for best price. Just walk away if you are getting nowhere in negotiations. 9 times out of 10 you will be called back.

Gima - The department store in Kizilay. Basic goods at basic prices. You could come across a bargain or two here. It's a good halfway point while crossing the intersection between Gazi Kemal Bulvari and Ataturk Bulvari.

Ankara Hali - A permanent market up Hisarparki Caddesi towards the Citadel. Farmers come here with their produce. You can buy Fruit, vegetables, local cheeses, fresh fish and cuts of meat from the many butchers. Make up a picnic and sit in the park.

Ankara Restaurants and Bars

Ankara Restaurants

Korfez Lokantasi - Bayindir Sok. 24, This very basic eatery in Kizilay has long been a favourite of locals and the visitor. Tasty, cheap grills, fish and mezes are the speciality.

Washington Restaurant - Doyran Sok. 5/7. Ideally situated near the Citadel in an atmospheric 400 year old building. A city institution which must be in your plans on a visit to the city. Very friendly restaurant with good prices.

Bogazici Lokantasi - Denizciler Cad. 1/A. Don't bother if you haven't got a large moustache or you might stick out as a tourist. Great food and prices and not full of tourists, so with no moustache you are bound to meet some friendly locals.

Hisar Kule Restaurant - Doyran Sok. 3. One of those great restaurants in the grounds of the Citadal. The garden enjoys fine views of the city, and the bell tower to the castle. To eat here on a warm evening is the ultimate in romance. The good food is just incidental.

Ankara Bars & Clubs

Sherlock Holmes - Ayranci, Although Turkey is Moslem, they are relaxed about drinking. This disco/bar attracts visitors to the city for it's 1st floor disco and the 2nd floor is devoted to a British pub. Snacks are served to the ex pats who populate the pub.

The North Shield Pub - Güvenlik Cad. 1 Ayranci, This is a countrywide chain of pubs. always busy with many patrons coming for the selection of whiskies. They serve a full menu of International cuisine.

The Lord Kinross - Cemal Nadir Sok. 18, You just have to accept that there is nowhere in the world without a British pub (One of the islands most succesful exports) Very keen dart players enjoy a local league and the English will feel at home here.
