Zurich Local History

Zurich is Switzerlands financial and commercial hub and is known internationally as an industrial and business centre. Zurich's stock exchange was founded in 1877 and is still the most important in the country.

Zurich's actual beginings was as a Roman customs port and was declared a free city in 1218. In 1351 it joined the Swiss Confederation. The Dada Art Movement was born in 1916 in Zurich and the city still has a strong intelectual and artistic tradition.

Stroll down the famous Bahnhofstrasse with its beautiful boutiques, fashion stores and pastry shops and you will realise why Zurich is considered a trend setting city that hosts all the international brands.

Buy a Cuckoo clock or fondue pot at on of the flea markets, Buerkliplats Flohmarkt is popular. Don't even think of leaving Switzerland without buying some chocolate at the world famous Confiserie Sprungli in Bahnhofstrasse 21.

Zurich Toy Museum - Fortunagasse 15. Showcasing a beautiful collection of toys from the 18th to the beginning of the 20th century. Open Mon-Fri 2pm-5pm, Sat 1pm-4pm.

Zurich Zoo - Zurichbergstrasse 221. View arounf 2000 animals in enclosures designed to imitate their natural habitats. Zoolino is perfect for young children to meet little animals.

Alpanmare - Gwattstrasse 12. An indoor breaker pool, 9 slides, whirpool thermal pool and an outdoor Rio Mare river are just a few of the highlights of Europe's biggest indoor waterpark.

Zurich Parks & Gardens

Chinese Garden - Bellerivestrasse. Opened in 1994 it is one of the biggest and most important Chinese gardens outside of China. Open March-October, Mon-Sun 11am-7pm.

Botanical Garden of the University of Zurich - Zollikerstrasse 107. Here you can find a tropical rainforest, Primeval forest with tree ferns, Alpine roses and scents of the Meditteranean. A truly enchanting garden to visit.

Backer Park - Hohlstrasse. Situated in the middle of district 4 this beautiful green area attracts locals and visitors alike.

Zurich takes much of its culinary identity from its location on the Zurichsee. The cuisine mixes land and sea with tradition and innovation. .

Try specialities like apfelkuechli (fried apple slices), potato croquettes, leberknodli (liver dumplings).

Kronehalle - Rami Strasse 4. Surrounded by a huge collection of 20th century art, enjoy large portions of traditional Swiss cuisine. This restaurant is a landmark.

Les Halles - Pfingerstwiedstrasse 6. Healthy Meditteranean cuisine is served in this old warehouse which also sells the antiques which fill it.

Bierhalle Kropf - In Gassen 16. Seated at one of the crowded tables you can enjoy generous portions of typical Swiss specialities. The potato croquettes are filled with farmers cheese and served with a huge salad and the Apfelkuechli are tender and sweet. Closed on Sun.

Cafe Schober - Napfgasse 4. This is Zurich's oldest confectionery, a must for chocolate lovers which serves an amazing Sunday brunch.

Mascotte - Theaterstrasse 10. A dance club offering everything from funk and soul to house and techno music.

Spheres - Hardturmstrasse 66. You can browse the bookstore and read a large selection of international magazines as well as enjoy a drink at the bar.

Malatesta - Niederorfstrasse 15. A great local bistro and bar for all ages.

Purpur - Seefeldstrasse 9. A DJ sets the mood with ambient sounds in this Morrocan-style lounge while you relax on a pile of pillows with a drink in hand.
