Gothenburg Travel Guide

Gothenburg was founded in 1621 by King Gustav II Adolf, but built by the Dutch. In 1731 Sweden became the gateway to China when the Swedish East India Company began trading with the east. Luxury goods were shipped to Gothenburg, and along with this came the British lifestyle and customs. Gothenburg was given the nickname 'little London'.

In the 1930's a Viking ship Askekarrsskeppet was found here which is from as far back as the 10th century. This is the most well preserved Viking ship ever to be found in Scandinavia.

Gothenburg became an important city in trade and shipping during the 19th century. The largest shipyard in Sweden is located here. Companies like Volvo and SKF have made Gothenburg their home.
