Puerto de la Cruz Travel Guide

Puerto de la Cruz Local History

Puerto de la Cruz is the principal tourist destination of the island, and is an old colonial town with a cosmopolitan atmosphere that is known to the 900,000 visitors that flock to its beaches and attractions yearly for a spot of R&R in the sun. What today's tourists possibly don't know is that people have been coming to Puerto ever since 19th century physicians started sending their ailing patients to the resort, as the climate was deemed a lot healthier than the cold English or Nederland's winters.

It is the oldest established resort and the most popular, with a picturesque Old Town, and the narrow cobbled streets and architecture of the colonial era. In addition to the hundred-year-old charms of the historical buildings and ambience, there are also magnificent hotels and all the modern conveniences today's tourists have come to expect.

Puerto de la Cruz Beaches

The Tenerifans are certainly ingenious, if they don't have any decent natural beaches, they just go out and make a few, or redesign the ones they already have.

The top resort of Playa Las Americas is an example of a constructed beach, and sand was imported form the Sahara desert to give the tourist a golden-sand playground, sadly though the gold has disappeared and now the beach has a greyish tinge.

The Playa Jardin is another good example of a constructed beach, and was designed by the Canarian Artist, Cesar Manrique, who worked with nature to create a paradise with walkways, waterfall, gardens, and a play area for children.
