Aquopolis - Villanueva de la Canada. Carretera de El Escorial. This is one of the biggest water attractions in Europe, with an adventure lake, gigantic water slides, wave machines, and any number of wet and wonderful things for the kids to do.

Museo Interactivo de la Ciencia Acconia (Acconia Interactive Science Museum) - Pintor Murillo. Parque de Andalucia, Alcobendas - In this interactive science museum children can get down to the wonders of science in hands-on displays and fascinating gadgets. It would be sensible to take along a friend who could help explain though, as many sectors are only in Spanish.

Warner Bros Movie World - Located 25 km from Madrid in the San Martin area, is 150 hectares/371 acres of themed park divided into five sections. With all the fun attractions of those in Australia and Germany, there is a 3D cinema, Rio Bravo water ride, cartoon theatre and the usual roller coaster, teacup ride, and of-course the Looney Tunes Express. Also on site are restaurants, gift shops, and live shows, including giant sized cartoon characters wandering in the crowds.

Madrid Zoo - Casa de Campo, regarded on one of the finest in Europe, this zoo has about 3,000 animals that roam freely behind moats, instead of old-fashioned and unfriendly bars. Also in the zoo is an aquarium where dolphins perform for visitors delight. And, especially for kids, is an animal petting area where they can see different creatures of every shape and size being fed. Parrot shows, raptors, and a shark tank, are among the various other attractions in this fascinating place.

Madrid Parks & Gardens

Parque del Retiro (Park of the Retreat) - Calle Alcala, Alfonso XII, Avenida de Menedez Pelayo, Paseo de la Reina Cristina - Once the hunting ground of Felipe II, now open to the public, the park is filled with pavement artists, buskers, and puppet shows over the weekends. Visitors can also hire boats to row the lake, or take a ride in one of the horse-drawn carriages.

Parque del Oeste (Park of the West) - Jardines del Paseo del Pintor Rosales, this quiet and lovely wooded area was originally designed by Cecilio Rodriguez in the early 20th century on what was a huge rubbish dump. It is planted with birch, cedar and fir trees, as well as, amongst other attractions, a magnificent 17,000-square-metre / 55,760-square-feet rose garden, known as La Roasaleda. Over summer Ernest Hemingway's favourite street comes to life with outdoor cafes and bars along the Paseo de Pintor Rosales.

Casa de Campo (Home Field) - Calle Marques de Monistrol de Portugal, this is one Europe's largest urban green spaces, and has a number of sports and recreational facilities such as tennis courts, swimming pool, and a lake for rowing or canoeing. Madrid's zoo,a cable car, and the Parque de Atracciones fun fair, with over 40 rides , are all situated on the grounds.

Nabucco - Hortaleza 108, this combination pizzeria and Trattoria is elegantly decorated in pastels with subtle, muted lighting, giving it a tranquil ambience. The service is excellent and the food heavenly, and the price won't ruin your evening

Lhardy - Carrera de San Jeronimo 8, Dark wooden panelling and red-velvet, with brass chandeliers, is the time honoured and traditional decor of this restaurant. Having been around for over 150 years Lhardy is a Madrid institution that is not going to go away anytime soon. The menu consists of traditional dishes such as Cocido a la Madrilena, or Callos a la Madrilena, as well as game, sea bass, and souffles. On the ground floor is a stand-up coffee bar, where you can sip a steaming drink while gathering yourself towards yourself up after a heavy night.
