Hierro Travel Guide
Hierro Local History
The Canaries have always been surrounded by an aura of mystery and legend; in fact some people claimed they were the remains of Atlantis.
The little island of El Hierro is a strange one, El Hierro means Iron but there is no metal on it at all and at one stage it was consider by Ptolemy that the meridian which runs through it was 'Zero Meridian' or the end of the ancient world. Its people, the Bimbaches, lived in simple caves or dry stone dwellings and practiced agriculture and coastal fishing.
The Bimbaches also left behind lots of petroglyphs which can now be view at many sites all over the island such as El Julan.
Valverde The islands capital is the small town of Valverde with its beautiful white house and lush gardens. Opposite the town hall is the parish church of Santa Maria de la Concepcion, which was built here in the 18th century. Inside you'll find the Madonna which dates from the same period.
El pozo de las Calcosas Below the town of Mocanal you'll find two natural swimming pools next to an ancient hamlet. This hamlet is preserved just as it was when it was first built, with dry-stone walls and thatched roof houses, all of which has been restored by the present owners.
La Cascada de Colores In the Caldera de Taburiente National Park, on the nearby island of La Palma, you find La Cascada de Colores or the colors waterfall. The little waterfall runs into a smallish red canyon, the color due to the iron in the soil, and then explodes into a multitude of colors. It will take quite a hike to get here but its well worth it. (Caldera de Taburiente National Park)
El Arroyo de dos Aguas Another great natural site to see when you in the Caldera de Taburiente National Park is this stunning river junction. Two different rivers, which are both born in the mountain crown, join here in a mix of colors. The one is clear mountain water while the other is an unusual orange color due to the iron deposits.
