Santa Cristina Ski Information

General information

The town of Santa Cristina not only offer beautiful nature, but also a wide variety of art and culture. One of the most compelling reasons for foreign visitors to ski the Val Gardena is its proximity to Venice (280 kilometers/three hours). A three-hour drive or train ride, brings visitors to La Serenissima, or most serene city, where ancient canals provide both the waterway transportation and enduring romance for which the city is known. Skiers visiting in February should not miss the Carnivale celebrations, during which residents, regional visitors, and tourists alike turn out for costumed revelry. The Cesa di Ladins, celebrates local Ladino culture, the natural history of the area, and Luis Trenker, (local-boy-made-good) a documentary filmmaker of the 1930s. Santa Cristina has 40 shops. Most popular among these are the workshops of the region’s world-renowned woodcarvers. As early as the Middle Ages, the craftsman of the Val Gardena had earned a reputation as expert carvers. Wooden bowls, utensils, and religious statuary are the most popular items of the day. Visitors seeking information on the Val Gardena’s history, geology, flora, and fauna should check out the Museum di Gherdeina in Ortisei. For the health conscious visitor, there is an Aerobic and Fitness Center.

Santa Cristina offers varied international gastronomy. The combination of Italian and local dishes is really exciting, and satisfy every taste bud. The Genziana Hotel restaurant serves traditional dishes prepared with great care. Among the specialties are deer medallions and home-made pasta with porcini mushrooms. La Baita Sofie is very cozy and serves typical Tirolean food. Bar 2000 is the place to be after a hard day out on the slopes. It serves wonderful warming beverages and offers live music. The Carzy Pub is where the younger, vibey crowd get together. For a quiet town like Santa Cristina, it can get quite loud in this establishment. It is well known for its spuntini, and cocktails specialties. The resort is also home to the Hotel Wolkenstein and Yeti’s Ombrella Bar, a tented established praised by revelers as the hottest apres-ski action in the valley. Dance music thumps, ski boots dance atop the bar, and as much beer ends up on the floor as in partiers’ bloodstreams.

Santa Cristina lies on the sunny side of the Val Gardena, in front of the Sassolungo. At an altitude of 1,428 m above sea level, it is a spread-out, but attractive, village between Selva and Ortisei in the famous Val Gardena. Linked into the Sella Ronda circuit and home to the famous Val Gardena downhill, all included in the Dolomiti Superski pass. It is a pleasant location in both winter and summer, and it offers easy access to all ski slopes, being at the base of the Monte Pana, Ciampinoi, Col Raiser and Seceda lifts. Santa Cristina's special vitality may be felt either in its square and most modern and friendly hotels or in the solitary farms of "Plesdinaz". In 2004, Val Gardena has been awarded with the title of "best ski resort" by the famous Italian magazine "OGGI", as the best ski resort in Italy. The valley has been chosen among the 60 most beautiful Italian ski resorts. The resort offers over 9 restaurants, 7 night clubs, and 1 public indoor pool.
