Pompeii Travel Guide

Pompeii Local History

In A.D. 79, Vesuvius erupted and covered the Roman city of Pompeii in layers of lava. Pompeii sparked the imagination of the world, and excavations begun, which brought light to life that existed 19 centuries ago.

Those that escaped the eruption and devastation of their city, returned once the lava had cooled and removed some of the precious treasures. They left plenty behind to be uncovered and taken to museums throughout Europe and America once the excavation process begun.

Some people believe that the second tragedy of Pompeii is its rediscovery. If it had been left to slumber for another 200 years, then we might have been able to excavate and maintain the site better.
