Elba Island Travel Guide

Elba Island Local History

Elba is the largest island in the Tuscan Archipelgo and the third largest in Italy. It is also the nearest to Continental Europe. Because of its iron mines, Elba has always had a big historical importance. Ligures, Greeks, Romans and Pisans all occupied the island until the Middle Ages

The Medici built up the walls of Portoferraio and also developed the tuscany culture. Napoleon, although his stay was short, built streets, developed laws to favour the mines and designed the flag of the island, still in use today. The iron mines are no longer in operation and Elba relies on tourism for its economy.
