Munich Travel Guide
Munich Local History
Benedictine Monks get the credit for putting Munich on the map, hence the name Munichen or 'monk settlement'. The official birth date of the city is 1158. Although a strong trading centre over the centuries things really started happening in the 19th century when the university moved to Munich and Germanys first railway arrived.
The Crown Prince of Bavaria at the time initiated a mammoth building programme and changed the capital into a cultural and artistic centre. Many buildings survive from this period. However World War 11 saw massive bombing damage and nearly half of the city was laid to waste.
During the postwar years the many of the city's historic buildings were restored to their former glory and Munich gradually became on of the most attractive cities in Germany
