Paradeplatz - This is the downtown shopping centre and is pedestrians only. The Paradeplatz is connected to Planken, where wooden planks were laid on the pavement to protect the rich ladies feet. The elegant shops, cafes and covered walkways are always busy and buzzing.

Market Square - Saturday, Tuesday and Thursday mornings see the central square come alive with stalls offering local fresh produce, flowers and a variety of locally produced food and drink. This is nice and relaxed, come and get a taste of Mannheim.

Maredo - Located in the pedestrianised zone in the centre of town. If you enjoy a big steak or Mexican food then this is for you. They are child friendly and the extensive menu is written in a few languages. Prices are reasonable and they do a mean schnitzel.

Buffalo Steakhouse - Friedrichsplatz 1, By the Water tower. A good restaurant for a romantic evening as the decor, candlelight and warm atmosphere are welcoming. They specialise in Argentinian cuisine so the carnivores will be happy. Food is good and more than enough.

Schutzenhaus - A great restaurant for lunch and situated in the northern suburb of Blumenau in the forest. They serve good old fashioned, hearty German fare at a fair price.

Restaurant Blass - Friedrichsplatz 12, Just opposite the Water Tower you will find this experience in goumet dining. The menu offers a unique blend of European cuisine. The decor is upmarket as are the prices.

Mannheim Bars & Clubs

Blau - Located in the colourful city district of Jungbusch. This bar lives by it's name and is decorated in Blue. A good place to meet people as it's popular with locals, good music and beer complete a relaxing evening/night.

ContraN - Werftstrasse in Jungbusch, A busy nightclub that is home to the young and fashionable. The bar is well stocked and they offer some interesting cocktails. Try their famous Absinth, they always have special offers to entice the punters.

Brokers Inn - Located at the University, this casual bar/cafe is a fun place to spend a night and can get a bit wild towards the early hours. A hang out obviously for students, but outsiders will soon get into the swing of things.
