Ayia Napa Travel Guide

Ayia Napa Local History

This town takes its name from the Greek word, which means wooded valley. In ancient times in the current location of the village there was a densely wooded valley abounding with natural springs.

In the pre-Christian era the Greek city of Throni was located at southwest end of the valley. Throni boasted the temple of Aphrodite, however an earthquake destroyed the temple and the city all that remains are the ruins to be found on the rocky coastline.

Following the discovery of a sacred icon of the Virgin Mary in a cave near the village a church was built at the shrine during the 14th century. The area around the monastery was only inhabited in 1790 and since then the village has continued to prosper. In the last thirty years the tourist industry has had a major influence on the town's economy.

Ayia Napa Attractions

Top Attractions

Monastery of Agia Napa This 16th century monastery is the town's most famous attraction and houses the well of the Miracle of Panagia. According to legend, the Virgin Mary appeared to dehydrated Christians sheltering from attack, and revealed a spring that saved their lives. Open daily from 9am to 10pm.

Marine Life Museum Located in the Ayia Napa Town Hall, this is the first museum of its kind in Cyprus. Exhibits include a reconstructed dinosaur era seabed, fish fossils, seashells and sea plants.

Palaces In between Limnara beach and Cape Greco stand the Palaces, the name of the spectacular formations formed on the rocks. The rocky beach has been sculpted over thousands of years by the sea and waves so that it now resembles a fine work of architecture. This can only be reached from the sea.

Stamna Taverna If you only have one Greek meal (shame on you) in Ayia Napa you must try STAMNA home cooking at its finest - Try Afelia or Kleftico or if you're a size zero go for the full meze - you'll look much better in that bikini !

Starskys Ayia Napa Went here on holiday and had a great time. We thought it was 70's and 80's and nearly didn't go in, but a big PR guy (Richie I think he was called) told us that they played elektro and funky house and the like. Went in and had a wikid time. Went every nite and even missed Jules at another club to go there!! Make sure you visit if you go to Napa.

Say hello to the owner Andreas, he's a wonderful host, just don't get him on to Manchester United. It's located at the bottom of Katalymata Avenue near the Tsokkos Apartments just off Nissi Avenue.
