Graz Local History

At the foot of the Styrian Alps, on the Mur River, you will find Austria's second largest city Graz. It is named after a fortress on the Schlossberg, and has been home to the Leopoldine Habsburgs since 1379. Today Graz is a rail, cultural, and industrial hub, which also hosts iron and steel works and breweries.

Bücherstube - Prokopigasse 16, City Centre. This is heaven on earth for most kids. Here you'll find a book that appeals to every kid in the world. The shop is decorated with teddy bears to make kids feel absolutely at eas, whilst their imaginations are ignited.

Graz Parks & Gardens

Schlossberg Gardens - Many of the trees here have been planted as early as the 19th century to cover the ruins of the old buildings. The impressive dolomite rocks is also a site to see.

Stadtpark - City Centre. A main feature of the garden is the fountain that made its way to Graz all the way from the Vienna Worl Exhibition in 1873. The luscious green sight came into being by the work of Knight Moritz Ritter von Franck more than a century ago.

Hilmteich Gardens - These gardens are built on the edge of Lake Hilmteich. In summer it's a lovely retreat to laze about in, whilst in winter skaters populate the frozen lake.

Malaga 43 Glacie Street. If you love South American food, then visit this restaurant near the city centre. Besides for exquisite food, they also serve a variety of South American red wines. In winter you can nestle yourself cozily before the fireplace a perfect way element to complete the ambience of this stunning restaurant. Prices range from affordable to quite expensive.

Strehly City Centre. This original coffeehouse is an Austrian delight. Any sweet tooth will find this a true haven with a range of patisseries, cakes and home-made ice cream sold here. This restaurant predominantly appeals to the older generations, but most people enjoy their specialties, which include pralines, truffles and 'Schlossbergkugeln'.

Kaiserhof 1 City Centre. This is a must visit for all ice cream lovers. Although fairly pricy, Kaiserhof is well-known for their absolutely magnificent ice cream creations. They also serve patisseries if you're in the mood for something different. It also proves to be a great place to relax for coffee lovers of all ages.

Graz Casino - Grazer Congress, 10 Landhausgasse. Spend your evening in the classy surrounds of the Graz Casino. To suit the ambience of this casino, the dress code is black tie and evening dress. Don't forget that this outing requires a minimum amount of EUR70 to be spent on gambling tokens. This will give you the chance to participate in a gamble in games like Black Jack and Roulette, or even the slot machines. The casino also has a restaurant that offers both an a la carte and set menu to perfect your evening out.

Cafe-Bar M1 1 Faberplatz. This popular hang out in the city centre, is the perfect place to have cocktails whilst appreciating the spectacular views of Graz's surrounds. Situated in the so-called pedestrian zone of Graz, it mainly attracts the young at heart.

Nachtschicht - 333 Wiener Street, Gösting. This nightclub offers something for everyone. It has three sections which cater for music from the 60s and 70s as well as pop hits (the 'Mausefalle'); techno and disco ('Kokomo'); and pop and rock ('The Rock Café') respectively. In addition to the selection of music, the club also offers a selection of bars to ensure that all their visitors stay entertained.
