The Sandusky River is famous for the spring walleye run that begins each year during March. The run usually peaks in early April, but fishing stays good throughout the month. The spring run is known for producing some of the largest walleye taken from Lake Erie each year.
In addition to fishing, birding opportunities abound in the Lake Erie Wing Watch Region. Enjoy over 300 different species of birds from the early spring waterfowl seen on the various ponds in the area, to the later spring warbler migration viewed at Magee Marsh Wildlife/ Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge, to the beautiful eagles that have a nest which can easily be viewed less than a mile from the cottage.
Visit the many birding hotspots in the area such as Castalia Pond, Castalia Quarry Reserve, Resthaven Wildlife Area, Pickerel Creek, Blue Heron Reserve, and many others all within a 25 mile or less radius.
Cedar Point & Ferry Boats to the Islands:
A short drive to Cedar Point and the Port Clinton or Sandusky ferry boats to the Islands. Boating, water skiing, tubing, biking on site. Memory Marina 1/4 mile from cottage. Dock available at the cottage.
Other area activities include winery tours, caves, Moonsoon Lagoon, African Safari Park, Lagoon Deer Park, Marblehead Lighthouse, Castalia State Fish Hatchery, and many others to numerous to mention.
Magee Marsh Wildlife Area is located on the scenic shore of Lake Erie; Crane Creek State Park offers a vast freshwater marsh and spacious sandy beach for enjoyment. Crane Creek comprises 79 acres of beach and marshlands adjoining the 2,600 acre Magee Marsh Wildlife Area and Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge. This coastal environment is home to more than 300 species of birds. Herons, waterfowl, warblers, gulls and the magnificent bald eagle make this park one of the best bird watching areas in the country. The refuge is located State Route 2 west of Sandusky. The refuge is adjacent to the state-operated Magee Marsh Wildlife Area. Early spring viewing includes waterfowl, while later spring brings in the warbler migration. Warblers pile in on these forested beach ridges in large numbers for rest and relaxation before crossing the lake to Canada. |
