The Hay Barn Cottage is the self catering unit attached to Bush Nook and derives its name as it is the lower level of the hay barn which was probably a communal barn when Bush Nook was a working farm more than 50 years ago. Originally part of the estate held in trust for the Earl of Carlisle in the Barony of “Guilsland”, it dates back to 1760. The property is stone built in traditional farmhouse style and like most of the properties in the area were built using stones “borrowed” from the nearby Hadrian’s Wall. Close to the Hadrian's Wall World Heritage site the Cottage is near to most of the main attactions along the Wall including the visitor centres at Birdoswald, the Roman Army Museum, Housesteads and the fabulous archaeological site of Vindoland.
The area is full of 2000 years of British history including the infamous Border Reivers period, and who knows you might be related!!
The Barn itself has been sympathetically restored to retain as many features of the original property as possible. It has one double bedroom which overlooks the garden.
There is a separate bathroom which offers our visitors the best amenities possible with a bath (with integral power shower) for those long hot soaks after a good days walking along Hadrian’s Wall. The lounge area is spacious, light and tastefully furnished. It enjoys views over the beautiful surrounding countryside through the original barn door entrance and also over the garden which is accessible through a doorway leading from the lounge area.
The modern kitchen has been carefully thought out in order to provide visitors with everything they might need whilst staying for their holiday. It is equipped with a dishwasher, washer, fridge, microwave, oven and separate hob. There is a dining area alongside the kitchen which is equipped with a good sized table and chairs. As part of the package we provide all bedding, towels and tea towels. The cost of lighting and heating is also included in the price of the self catering unit. A Welcome Pack is provided on arrival which contains your basic initial needs for milk, bread, butter and eggs, tea & coffee
We hope you will be captivated by this fascinating area. |

FINDING US
Bush Nook is about two minutes off the A69 halfway between the towns of Brampton and Haltwhistle. The A69 is the most Northerly East/West trunk road in England and is easily accessed from the M6/A7 to the West, or from the A1 to the East. Turning off the A69, at the brown ‘Bush Nook’ sign (signposted 'Spadeadam' & 'Birdoswald' & Denton) we are about half a mile (800 meters)down the hill on the right, approximately 300 yards (350 meters) past the wetlands, on your left.
From Birdoswald Roman Fort or Greenhead, follow the B6318 into Gilsland. Keeping the BRIDGE Inn on your left, follow the road out of Gilsland in a Southerly direction, past the village school on your left, over the railway crossing (about ½ mile/750 meters) and after the road bends left it starts going uphill. We are about 300 yards (350 meters) on the left. If you reach the A69 you’ve passed us!. On foot we are about 20 minutes walk (1500meters-1 mile) following the road from Gilsland.
