OVERVIEW
‘Low Penhowe’ is old Yorkshire dialect for ‘the sheep pen on a hill’. Today, the house has been described as “a very elegant home” by the English Tourist Council, which has awarded owners Philippa and Christopher Turner the Council’s 5 Diamonds and the Gold award for their outstanding Yorkshire B&B. A traditional Yorkshire stone-built farmhouse, with stunning views overlooking the Howardian Hills and across to the North Yorkshire Moors, the house makes an idyllic spot for a quiet few nights away. Low Penhowe is also the perfect location for anyone wishing to enter into the hustle and bustle of York, while enjoying the peace and tranquillity of rural England. From Low Penhowe our guests are easily able to explore the countryside, including the North Yorkshire Moors National Park and Yorkshire Wolds. The market towns of Malton, Pickering and Helmsley are all close at hand, while stately homes including Castle Howard, Duncombe Park and Nunnington Hall are on the doorstep. Our guests have enjoyed many happy visits to the wealth of old castles and abbeys that form part of Yorkshire’s rich local history. We pride ourselves on the excellence of our aga cooked breakfasts, offering a variety of local and homemade produce. Enjoy a selection of our own free-range eggs, locally cured bacon, black pudding from our butcher, homemade marmalade, home baked bread and honey from the bees at the adjoining farm. We are spoilt for choice when it comes to eating out within easy reach of Low Penhowe. There are 4 excellent pubs, all within 3 miles! The Stonetrough Inn at Kirkham, recommended in “The Good Pub Guide”, is a country inn that offers the ideal combination of traditional pub and elegant restaurant, as does the Blacksmiths Inn at Westow, which has recently been completely renovated and also mentioned in the “The Good Pub Guide”. The Bay Horse at Burythorpe and The Jolly Farmers at Leavening are both good local pubs that have varied menus and the friendly welcoming atmosphere typical to North Yorkshire.

Welcome Pack: Thank you so much for a wonderful stay of five nights at Low Penhowe. We really enjoyed ourselves here! In fact it is extremely difficult to imagine B&B hosts who are as friendly, helpful and nice as you. Our double room has been very lovely and as you know we enjoyed the excellent cooked English breakfasts very much, even or because it has beaten us several mornings. So in a nutshell: this was a great pleasure for us!

Guestbook: What a fantastic break you have given us at Low Penhowe – beautiful surroundings, wonderful food and hospitality. You both were so friendly and welcoming – thank you very much indeed – you even laid on the weather! It was so helpful, too, the attention to detail in the planning and the help in booking and planning routes and pubs. We can’t thank you enough. Jane would like to commend the black pudding! We’ll be back!
Brian and Gill Skinner and Jane Marsh, Great Missenden, Buckinghamshire, July 2006

We can’t thank you enough for making our stay so very pleasant. From the time we arrived until we left we always felt welcome. Your hospitality and friendliness were over the top and the accommodation at Low Penhowe was the best. It was so nice to share you lovely house and gardens. Thanks also for the scenic route recommendations and taking care of our dinner reservations. The breakfasts were wonderful and plentiful. Your genuine concern and care are evident in the extra touches and attention to detail. We are blessed to have met you both and look forward to another stay.
P.S. I enjoyed gathering the eggs too. Ray and Shelia Geer, Kansas City, Kansas, USA, July 2006

A one night stay in this beautiful house is not enough. We will be back again to enjoy the wonderful hospitality of Philippa and Christopher (and have another fantastic breakfast!)
Graham and Jane Smith, Lincoln, Lincolnshire, July 2006

As we sit pondering what to write, we are aware of just how relaxed we have become over the last few days at Low Penhowe. What has been the receipe? Excellent quality of ingredients

2 super hosts
Outstanding food
Elegant surroundings
Beautiful scenic views
Mix all the above carefully with a liberal helping of repartee and humour, kept at an even temperature and allow it to rest. The results are a wonderful holiday to hopefully repeat in the future.
Marjorie & Alan Evans, Atherton, Manchester, July 2006

Many thanks for a wonderful relaxing break at Low Penhowe. Good breakfast and splendid views, couldn’t have asked for better hosts. We hope to visit again soon. Jonathan Bussell and Lucy, Yarm, Cleveland, July 2006

Having booked to see a concert at Castle Howard, it was necessary to find accommodation within the same locality. Using the internet we found the Low Penhowe website which was by far the most impressive. On reading past gusts comments we had no hesitation in booking. We have not been disappointed. Everything that Philippa and Christopher provided over our weekend stay was of the highest standard..
The Gold Awards are most certainly fully justified. We will look forward to a return visit.
