Guestbook: We visited Turkey in October 2006 for the first time and found a welcome like no other. We hired a car and on our travels met up with a wonderful family in Patara (Gelemiş), the birthplace of St Nicholas. Serdar Akay spoke fairly good English and warmly welcomed us to his brand new Pension: 'The Carettas Hotel'. The accommodation was just what we required. It was clean, in a quiet location with beautiful pine forests behind. For a reasonable charge of £13 per night we had a room which could have slept three, en suite bathroom, and breakfast. We paid a further £10 for an evening meal for the two of us. The meals were Turkish, very filling and healthy and there was always plenty of tea (çay).
As a holiday resort there is a lot of interest; walks, archaeological sites, beaches.
There are beautiful walks through the pine forests to Kalkan along the Lycian Way which is part of a 509km footpath, way-marked with red and white paint flashes every 100m or so.
Evening at the Cayagzi Beach.
Views are stunning. The Turtle Beach is phenomenal. The white sand stretches some 50m wide and 20km long. The female Loggerhead Turtle Caretta caretta comes ashore in May to September at night to lay her eggs in the sand. The beach closes at dusk.
The crystal clear blue waters are gently sloping, so safe for all to swim. By the headland are numerous fish making for good snorkelling.
You can climb to the top of a good sized Roman Ampitheatre at Patara and see several Lycian Tombs.
For the really keen walkers there are some wonderful mountains perhaps an hour away by car to the North. Heights of 3000m can be achieved in stout boots and warm gear.
There are boat trips to Kalkan and Kaş to the West.
There is horse riding on the beach and canoeing in the river.
A trip to the Saklikent Kanyon is spectacular but be careful after heavy rains as it could be impassable at the first hurdle! and the waters are always cold.
You could be lucky and see the iridescent Smyrna Kingfishers and huge Buzzards. We also saw Goldfinches, Jays, Sandpipers, Swallows, Grebe, dainty white Egrets and Herons.
Definitely a holiday to remember. We will return next year!
