Mpofu is situated near the secret site of Chief Maqoma’s Kraal. Its steep terrain and varied rainfall
supports a remarkable variety of animal and plant communities. The African savannah blurs into the extensive
tracts of rare indigenous forest. On the slopes of the Amathole Mountains 7500ha in extent,
it rests between Fort Beaufort, Post Retief & Balfour. It offers excellent opportunities
to see a rich diversity of game such as large breeding herds of Cape Buffalo,
Burchell’s Zebra, Eland, Giraffe and White Rhino. Africa’s great cats follow
silently in their tracks. Self-drive or allow us to arrange an
unforgettable day or night game drive in a customised vehicle.
WAYLANDS achieved National Heritage Site status for various
important reasons and boasts a unique colony of rare
Mountain Bamboo ( Tesselatus family ), and some of
the most easterly species of the fynbos biome.
We are proud of our growing herd of indigenous
Nguni Cattle and our own populations of
Mountain Reedbuck, Kudu, Duiker,
Grysbok, Lynx, Black Eagles
and the elusive Aardvark.
FRONTIER WAR HISTORY
WAYLANDS is site of the Siege of Haartebeestfontein 1851 and Smith’s Laager.
Post Retief featured prominently in the 8th Frontier War - the War of the Axe.
The Post Retief Barracks is the finest example of military fortification of the Frontier Wars still standing.
Visit old war graves and famous battlesites.
Fort Fordyce is situated 30 kms away amongst precious tracts of indigenous forest
The Barracks, Piet Retief’s House, the Church and interesting graveyard are all National Monuments.
Historic Interest outings can be arranged with the owner who continues to do research on the diverse
history of the area. Waylands is the legendary hiding place of Elizabeth Salt’s lost fortune.
Let the magic and mystery of WAYLANDS encapture you.
