Guestbook: We experienced Moroccan hospitality at its best at Dar Nilam, a B&B in Tangier, and welcomed the peacefulness of being just outside the city hubub. Located in an upscale neighborhood with views of the Strait of Gibralter, Dar Nilam offers casual elegance unlike anything else we experienced at even pricier places in other parts of the country. The accommodations were spacious and comfortable, and the food exceeded all the other fine meals we consumed in 16 days, including those at the 5-star El Minzah Hotel! The living room and dining area might even be considered 5-star for a B&B!
Personable young hosts, Rachid and Faty, graduates of the International School of Tourism, strive to differentiate their guest house from others by offering an abundance of the finest authentic Moroccan cuisine at very affordable prices. Service was exceptional! A personal waiter stands nearby like a guard from Buckingham Palace to ensure every need is attended to in the dining room. Rose petals and fresh flowers adorn the rooms, and you’ll even pass a couple of camels just before reaching the B&B.
We found that Dar Nilam was a wonderful place to anchor and then take day trips to enjoy other parts of Northern Morocco. For those taking the ferry across from Spain, it would be a perfect way to get a feel for Moroccan culture in just a few days. Our hosts were able to arrange for an excellent driver to escort us to Chefchouen, a delightful and picturesque small town in the mountains about 2 1/2 hours away; the train station, just 5 minutes away by taxi, made getting to Asilah (on the beach 45 minutes south of Tangier) quite easy. If you like gambling, the casino is a stone’s throw away.
Rachid and Faty provide an unusual opportunity to experience Morocco and its customs; exchanging personal questions and views about their country and ours added to our experience tenfold! Their love of the hospitality industry and their knowledge of operating a very professional establishment make for a warm and delightful stay. This is a gem waiting to be discovered!
