From the narrowest of streets, the door to the house opens onto a tranquil courtyard where a mosaic fountain trickels into the plunge pool. One bedroom is approached from the courtyard, as well as a bathroom with seperate shower.
The main living area is on the first floor where a place for dining and sitting opens through traditional arches onto a balcony that overlooks the pool below. Two bedrooms lead from the balcony and share an en-suite shower room.
The style throughout combines simplicity with traditional Moroccan craftsmanship and local products. The result is a house with real character providing every practical comfort.
Also off of the balcony is the beautiful salon, cool in summer and with an open fire for cooler evenings.
A further flight of stairs reveals the large roof terrace with a dining area ideal for breakfast. A berber tent with hand painted ceiling provides relief from the mid day sun and there is plenty of room for private sunbathing.

This beautifully restored house was built over a century ago as part of a much larger Riad, long since divided into smaller homes. The site has been occupied for almost a thousand years, and the layout of the narrow streets in this part of the Medina remains essentially unchanged since the twelth century.
We found Dar Soulahfa in 2003 and embarked upon complete retosation of the house in keeping with its age while adding those 21st century benefits that now makes the house such a comfortable place to stay.
Perfectly located in the very heart of the Medina with the main square Jemaa el-Fna only a five minute walk. However, once inside the house you will find a calm and peaceful haven, an ideal retreat from the hustle of the streets.
The surrounding houses are mostly occupied by Morrocan families and a stay at Dar Soulahafa with provide a insight into life in the Marrakech Medina. |
