Medan - is the capital city of north Sumatra and also the fourth biggest city in Indonesia. It is an enormous place with lovely 19th century Dutch buildings in the more affluent suburbs and badly built lean-tos everywhere else, that the vast majority of the population in. The finest two buildings in the city are the Istana Maimoon Palace and the fabulous black-domed Mesjid Raya. There are also some attractive European style buildings along Jalan Sukarno-Hatta. There are several interesting museums; the Museum of North Sumatra is particularly fascinating as it covers the culture and history of the region.

Lake Toba The lake is awe-inspiring sight, as it is an amazing volcanic crater situated in the central part of northern Sumatra. It is the largest lake in South-East Asia and occupies the centre of an enormous volcano that collapsed in on itself after a huge eruption about 100,000 years ago. Sheer mountains and sandy beaches that are sheltered by pine trees encircle the lake. Samosir is a famous the island in the middle of the lake, which was probably created by later eruptions up to 75,000 years ago. Samosir is the most popular attraction on Northern Sumatra and consequently has plenty of accommodation and restaurants on the shoreline.

Berastagi This is an attractive hill town in the Karo Highlands, over which loom the volcanoes of Gunung Sinabung and Gunung Sibayak. The climate here is agreeably cool as the town is 1300m (4260ft) above sea level. Tourists visit Berastagi to gain experience of the culture of the Karo Batak people. Trekking is a very popular pastime around here as there are guided treks into the Gunung Leuser National Park and to the volcanoes.

The Sumatran Orangutans Rehabilitation Center Also known as Bukit Lawang, lies in South of Gunung Leuser national park. Here young orangutans are taught self preservation skills by human teachers for a return to their original habitat. The center is a 45 minute walk from Bukit Lawang at the end of a river trail. A canoe on a cable is provided for crossing the river. Besides of to observe the Sumatran orangutans, Bahorok is place for the adventurous. About The Orangutans. One of the great apes, usually vegetarian & tailes & equivalent to the African gorilla & Chimpanzee. Their name, in Indonesia, means "Man of the forest". Orangutans are often loners & do not travel in large families. Another orangutans rehabilitation center is in Tanjung Puting National Park Central kalimantan serves the quite distinct Bornean subspecies of this endangered ape.

Taman Rekreasi, Seri Deli –Medan. This is a typical Medan eating place, where a group of stall-owners group together and put chairs out for the passing diners. A waitress brings a menu that lists all the dishes that are on offer from the stalls. This is the best of these places and it encircles a small pond located to the north of Mesjid Raya.

Kedai Kopi Kurnia - Jl Maj Jend Sutoyo 22, Medan. This is a very popular Chinese eating-place as the food is of a consistently good standard.

Tip Top Kafe - Jl Jend A Yani 92,Medan the western food served here is excellent. You should try the delicious beef sandwiches and ice cream.

Cahaya Baru - Jl Cik Ditiro 8l, Medan. This restaurant serves really good Indian food at reasonable prices.

Sumatra Bars & Clubs

Lyn's - Jl Jend A Yani 98,Medan. This is the nearest to a British pub that you will find in Medan. It has a dartboard, a piano and a good range of drinks on offer.

Tavern Pub - Danau Toba Hotel complex, Medan. This pub supplies draught beer to thirsty travellers and live music is available most nights.

Haus Musik Nightclub - Jalan Sutoyo, Medan. This can be found a mere 50m east of the bridge. A younger crowd congregate here and many of Medan's gay community.
