Sunshine Coast Travel Guide

Sunshine Coast Local History

Long since Captain James Cook pass along the shores of the Sunshine Coast back in 1770, it has become one of the main tourist attractions in Australia. It was only after the Second World War that development along this stretch of the Queensland coast really started.

The 1950's saw a move towards property development along the coast, causing a mini boom in the area. Large beachfront holiday apartments were erected to support the ever-growing tide of holidaymakers flocking towards the coast. Development was also happening further along the coast at Byron Bay and Surfers Paradise, prompting one journalist to refer to the region as the 'Gold Coast' due to it's raising property values.

By the 1960's most of the land along the coast had been developed, and developers started looking to the surrounding farms and wetlands for further development. In 1993 Fraser Island, the largest sand island in the world, was proclaimed a world heritage site.
