Krabi Local History
The town of krabi shows signs of being inhabited as early as 25000-35000 B.C as can be seen be artifacts such as stone tools, pictures and skeletons found in caves and cliffs. Origionaly called Baan Thai Samor in the 12th century, the region became part of Thailand in the Rttanakosin Period. The name Krabi was given to the town by King Chulalongkorn.

Krabi Shopping
Krabi is a fantastic place to buy souvenirs. Street vendors sell everthing from Thai silk scarves and sarongs to hammocks at reasonable prices. As with the rest of Thailand, Krabi is a great place to buy gems, Thai antiques, rattan and rosewood furniture, orchids which are specialy packed to survive a long plane ride and pewter ware.
The most famous of Thailands exports is their unique and beautiful silk. Look out for a tie-dye silk traditional to the north-east.
Krabi Beaches
Ao Nang Beach - the most developed and cleanest of the beaches in the area. Ao Nang has a peaceful atmosphere and the shallow waters are great for children.
Hat Noppharat Thara Beach - this beach is part of Koh Phi National Marine Park and at low tide you can walk over to other smaller bays.
Rai Leh Beach - reaches by long-tail boats and surrounded by majestic cliffs and rock formations which gives this beach an isolated feal and make it popular with rock climbers. The white sandy beach and shallow water also make it great for sun tanning and swimming.
Krabi Restaurants and Bars
Great western and Thai cuisine is available in Krabi. Try some spicy Thai dishes in one of the restaurants or cafe's. Specialities include Patpong Curry Pla Mulk, which is a spicy yellow squid curry or Keng Kai, which is a chicken curry.
Soups are also a popular dish in Krabi, try Tom Yum, the famous sour soup. Traditionalt Thai people eat their food with their right hand, but it is perfectly acceptable to ask for a knife and fork with wich to eat your meal.

Chok Dee - Krabi Krabi. Restaurant located in the centre of town with a friendly atmosphere and wonderful Thai food.
Cafe Europo Scandinavian Restaurant - 1/9 Soi Ruamjit raod, Muang, Krabi. A fantastic Scandinavian style restaurant and rumour has it that Leonardo DiCaprio ate here while filming The Beach.
Night Market - Krabi. The market sells authentic Thai snack food such as soups, chicken, rice and fruit.
Kwan Coffee Shop - Krabi Pier. The best coffe in town, they also serve great noodle dishes and sandwiches. Light jazz and blues provide great background music.
Krabi Bars & Clubs
Reggae Bar - Phi Phi Island. The biggest and best club in the area, were locals and tourists dance the night away.
Cat's Eye Bar - Ao Nang, 260 Moo 2. An informal bar and cockatil lounge, also serving snacks.
Orchidae Beach Bar - Ao Nang, Klong Muang Beach 98 Moo 3. A wonderful, casual beach venue with a full bar.
Oscars - Soi 5 Maharat street, Krabi Town. Live music and a lively vibe.
