Faafu Local History
The Maldives were for a long time a sultanate, at first under Dutch and then under British protection. They became a republic in 1968, just three years after they gained independence. Only one Island has been developed as a Resort in the unspoiled Faafu (North Nilandhe) Atoll. Filitheyo Island is 35 minutes by seaplane and a further 10 minutes by dhoni (boat) south of the capital Male

Faafu Beaches
The Filitheyo Island Resort is the only resort island in the Atoll with a secluded position and an unexplored reef. It is surrounded by a beautiful white sandy beach and is covered in dense tropical vegetation such as palm trees, rubber trees, and mangroves.

The staple foods of Maldivians are fish and rice with chicken and meat only eaten on special occasions. the staple foods of Maldivians. The local cuisine includes fried fish, fish curry and fish soup. The local drink is raa, sweet and tasty toddy tapped from the crown of the palm trunk.
Coconuts are easily available but there are surprisingly few fruits and vegetables grown on the islands. Alcohol can only be found in the tourist resorts.
