Tawang, in Arunanchal Pradesh in North Eastern India, the beautiful land of Monpas is at an altitutde of 3,500mtrs. It is bordered by Tibet in North, Bhutan in south west and Sella ranges in east separating it from West Kameng district. Area of Tawang dist is 2085kms.
At Tawang one is treated with a perfect mixture of nature, religion, history and legends. It is inhabited by Monpa tribe. Monpas belong to Mongoloid stock. Their main livelihood is animal husbandary and agriculture. Tawang has many monasteries. Most famous is ‘Tawang Ganden Namgyal Lhatse’. It is the birth place of 6th Dalai Lama. Tawang has number of lakes, water falls and hot springs.
On our way to Tawang via Bhalukpong, Tipi, Tenga, Bomdilla and Dhirang we saw breathtaking beauty of nature. In between Tenga and Bhalukpong one can enjoy thick undisturbed evergreen forest on both sides. A lovely drive that you will wish to do again and again. Sella Lake and pass on way are at an altitutde of 14000 feet. Further up on way to Tawang is jaswantgarh with a temple in memory of great soldier jaswant singh who faught the war of Noranang with Chinese in 1965. From Tawang a road goes to Lhasa (508 kms) and then to Beijing (4306 kms). Indo China border at Bumla hut is 37 kms from Tawang. Civilians can go up to Y junction with special permits issued at Tawang. Drive is hilly and tough but beauty is unparalleled. One can see old bunkers of Indo China war of 1965. A must visit place for any travel enthusiasts.
