Siem Reap Local History

Siem Reap Town serves as a gateway to the temple ruins of the remnants of the Angkor Capital and is actually a cluster of old villages. Angkor means Holy or Capital City and Khmer was the dominant ethnic group in ancient and modern Cambodia. Angkor was the capital city of the Khmer Empire that existed in the area of Cambodia between the 9th and 13th Centuries. The temple ruins represent the pinnacle of the ancient Khmer architecture, art and civilization.

At its height, the Age of Angkor was when it contained over a million people. Vast waterworks and grand temples were constructed and its military, economic and cultural dominance held sway over a large area of Cambodia.

After the 13th century, Angkor suffered repeated invasions by the Thais and the capital was moved. The temples remained active, although their function changed over the years. Angkor Wat was visited several times by Western explorers and missionaries between the 16th and 19th centuries, but today, Angkor is visited by tourists from all over the world.
