    LOCATION & AREA

'...you could imagine yourself on the Côte d’Azur without the pretentiousness. Drive along the mountain-backed road to Kas, and you might be touring the Amalfi coast.’The Times.

Kalkan itself is a sophisticated small resort but friendly and completely undeveloped compared to places like Marmaris and Bodrum. English is widely spoken and it’s the kind of place you’ll want to come back to again and again and again. Kalkan and nearby town Kas were Greek-populated until 1923 and both are renowned for their Greek architecture – wooden balconies, bougainvillea etc. The old town is subject to strict preservation orders so is guaranteed to retain its character. In Kalkan, where there is a roof there is a restaurant and competition has made the town a gastronomic treat. If you’ve tried all the restaurants on Patara Prince Resort already – there are 3 serving everything from pizza to Turkish and Mediterranean specialities - take the water taxi over the bay to Kalkan town or an economical taxi ride and sample one of the 40 restaurants there. Our favourite is Adam’s Restaurant and if you eat there you'll get 10% discount.

Kas, about 12 miles away, is the nearest small town and Greece comes right up to the Turkish mainland here. Kastellorizo, the most easterly of all the Greek Islands – and the setting for Best Foreign Language film Mediterraneo – sits practically in the harbour at Kas and within a mile and a half of the shore. Take a glorious day-trip from Kas which will cost you only 12 euros. Greece’s proximity makes it possible to make a stay here a two-country holiday as from Fethiye, 45 miles away, hydrofoils make the 1½ hour crossing to Rhodes (an official entry point into Greece) every weekday in summer too.

It’s a little-known fact but there are more Greek and Roman ruins in Turkey than in Greece and Italy put together! Just one such is to be found at nearby Patara –birth-place of Father Christmas and oracle of Apollo - and after which Patara Prince resort is named and indeed modelled! This ruined Roman city guards the approach to a 10-mile long white sand beach, one of the longest anywhere in the Mediterranean and which has recently been featured on BBC1’s Holiday programme and topped the Evening Standard’s list of Ten Fantastic Summer Beaches! Sun-bathe, swim or go horse-riding there all day long but at night Patara beach is the exclusive preserve of loggerhead turtles who come there to nest. In ancient, pre-Roman times, the Turquoise Coast from Fethiye round to almost Antalya, was known as Lycia ("Land of Light"). The Lycians’ many monuments still dot the entire landscape of the south-west coast of Turkey and the ruins close by at UNESCO World Heritage site, Xanthos – those which weren’t removed by Charles Fellowes and taken to the British Museum! – are a must. As is the sunken city at Kekova, reachable only by boat either from Kas or Ucagiz or, better still, charter a boat in the harbour at Kalkan and take a 2-day private cruise in style and at a price which, for the experience, you simply won’t believe. Saklikent Gorge (“Hidden Valley”), was only discovered as recently as 18 years ago and is the longest and deepest gorge in Turkey and the second-biggest in Europe! And the Lycian Way, Turkey’s only long-distance footpath also passes through Kalkan, Kas and Finike as well as many ancient sites on its spectacular route through the mountains and along the coastline of south-west Turkey, following the line of Roman and Ottoman roads, mule tracks and nomad trails.

Public transport is plentiful in this part of Turkey and remarkably good value - 3YTL (£1) will take you all 12 miles along the glorious road to Kas – listed as one of the Top Ten most beautiful coastline drives in the world. If you’d rather hire your own car then we can arrange the best rates for you in Kalkan. Dalaman is the nearest airport 75 miles away and we can also set up transfers for you at last year's prices! Patara Prince is a holiday home to international politicians and celebrities and you will also feel safe in the knowledge that the resort has 24-hour security.

Swimming, sun-bathing, sailing, scenery, walking, history – we believe this part of Turkey has it all. Come and see it for yourself now while it’s still so unspoilt – you won’t be disappointed. It’s not a holiday – it’s heaven!

Guestbook: '...we found the apartment, resort, Kalkan and Turkey absolutely wonderful! Such a different country and culture and food to die for! The apartment was excellent in every way and we loved our time there.' Lee & Jo, Essex.
'The apartment was well furnished and blessed with airconditioning in bedroom and lounge which in such high temperatures was really important , each time we entered we breathed a sigh of relief . The bedroom was cool and had plenty of storage space and a comfortable extra big bed. The sea view from the balcony was lovely at any time of day and we sat outside a great deal . The apartment was situated at the top of the complex and the best pool and supermarket was behind the apartment just across a little road. Would certainly visit again, would recommend without hesitation, we had a lovely holiday. ' Lorna & family, Surrey.
