| The apartment’s bay window -‘cumba’ in Turkish- hangs over a lively pedestrian street (Balo Sokak), so that you can look down upon bustling every-day Istanbul from your own retreat. As you leave the building, next door to the left is a bakery for fantastic fresh-baked bread, and next door to the right is a ‘bufe’ selling Turkish coffee, tea and snacks. A few buildings further up you’ll find Nevizade Sokak, strewn with tables and packed with fabulous restaurants and bars where at night you can be serenaded by wandering gypsy musicians. A few buildings more and you’re on Istiklal Caddesi, the main pedestrian thoroughfare and 5 minutes walk away from Taksim square, the commercial centre of Istanbul.
If you do wish to visit Sultanahmet for some historical context (or maybe a carpet?!) then you are 15mins away by taxi or half an interesting hour by tram and tube.
