Gundogan
Covered with colourful flowers all year round, Gundogan means `the Sunrise`. Famous for its ancient rock cemeteries and rock formations, it is a small town on the Bodrum Peninsula.
Some imaginative people believe that these rock formations are, in fact the remains of an ancient zoo. There may be truth in this, as Gundogan is located very near to the ancient Lelegian city of Madnasa. These historians of antiquity say that the lelegians were skillled in stone work. if you look carefully at these rock formations with a little imagination thrown in then you may see the wild animals of the ancient zoo carved in stone!
It is an important town for fishing, sponge diving, olive and tangerine growing. The old and new settlers have protected the character of the place. They have not touched the houses surrounded with trees of olive, mandarins, bananas, pomegranates and oak. The scent of orange trees welcoming visitors along the seaside still remains. Gundogan has 4000 inhabitants.
Boat trips leave from here to secluded Bays along the coast. You can catch a ferry to Didim on the other side of the Bay and watch dolphins and seals swim alongside the boat.
Situated among tangerine, olive and pine trees, intimate restaurants and cafes built on jetties circle the Bay offering traditional Turkish cuisine. Gundogan is also cheaper than other parts of the peninsula. Relax and take it easy with a chilled glass of wine or the local delicacies. There are large colourful cushions provided to sit on, on the many jetties circulating the Bay where you can chill out, people watch, sip a refreshing drink and watch the waves breaking on the rocks and children playing in the crystal blue waters.
This is a great place for snorkeling where you enter the sea from the jetties. Sit at the beach bar and watch the sun go down and witness the spectacular sunsets. There is a small harbour with fishing boats, yachts, gullets and a sailing school offering dingy sailing, windsurfing ,jetskis and waterskiing.
Across the Bay is `Rabbit Island` which has an old Greek church and standing remains of a Byzantine monastic settlement dated to the 9th Century A.D.
If you wish to be active during your stay here, you will have plenty to do - archeological trips in the area, windsurfing, under water photography, diving lessons, horse riding, walking and trekking.
History, dramatic landscape and a natural unspoilt Bay and friendly people await you! As they say `Nothing less than history, sun, seaside, nature and friendly people can be found`. |

Guestbook: We had a fab time in your lovely apartment and really enjoyed our time there. Gundogan really great place to stay - we only went into Bodrum twice for the shops but other than that were happy pottering around Gundogan in the evenings. It is so Turkish after staying in Gumbet -heavenly. Your apartment was a pleasure to stay in and I would have no problem recommending it to anyone and would stay again. We spent two weeks in Vyletta Apartment in Gundogan and enjoyed it very much. It is in a quiet area overlooking the village of Gundogan with a breathtaking view of the bay. It is approx 10 mins walk from the bus station where you can get a dolmus to Bodrum where you can connect to any other town in the area or to take you around the village of Gundogan.Taxis are also available in the bus station late into the night.( ?1.50 to Vyletta apt). It is about 15 mins easy strolling to the sea front where there are many bars and restaurants. It is about 5 mins from the nearest shop for basics. The apartment itself is beautifully furnished and has everything you need in the way of household equipment for your holiday. There is plenty of storage space including clothes hangers. There is a spacious balcony to sit in the shade. The pool area is clean and private and also enjoys a lovely view. We only took a taxi home to your apt twice while we were there - we walked the hill every night, and the neighbour`s dog came down every night and met us and escorted us back up.You can tell them we loved their dog!! It is a very pleasant walk and well lit at night. The ` to and from` the airport also went off without a hitch as well and it was great to be met at that time of night - we really appreciated it. Your own pics certainly do the place justice and show it in a very true light. Thanks again for renting us your lovely home in the sun.` (submitted from Anne 2/7/2006)`
`your apartment is lovely!` (Sue 11/8/06)
`Arrived back home on Tuesday after a truly wonderful holiday. We have fallen in love with Gundogan and the people were extremely friendly and kind. We didn`t really travel much - one boat trip and a day in Bodrum -and preferred to stay by the fantastic pool by the apartment or spend the day at a beach club in Gundogan. We found many good bars and restaurants, particularly a couple of very, very cheap local places. The Dutch couple at the apt -Hans and Margaret - were really helpful and we will hopefully stay in touch with them. The apartment was excellent - modern, spacious and comfortable and the views were great. The breeze up in the hills was very welcome and made things a bit cooler. It was a bonus to have such privacy by the pool - a real selling point. Murat was friendly and helpful and we also were grateful to Arif for his driving. Thanks again,Andy and Pauline.` (24/8/06)
`We had a wonderful honeymoon. The flat was immaculate, and extremely comfortable, and we had many romantic evenings sitting on the balcony. The weather was perfect, and the area is full of interesting things to do and see. It`s a shame to be back at work, but we certainly have very many amazing memories. Thanks again and we might come back for a booking for next year...` (submitted by Max 22/9/06)
`Just a quick note to say what a lovely time we had in Gundogan. The apartment is lovely - what a stunning view. The people are also really friendly and hardly a tourist in sight! We may well take you up on staying again next year it as we loved the place, the people and the view so much that it has left me feeling very dissatisfied with grey old London! We took a lot of digital photos while we were there so,once we have got around to processing them, I will email you any which may be of interest. Many thanks again and best wishes.` (Sue McCready 2/10/06)
