The Costa Del Sol is host to millions of tourists a year taking advantage of the frequent and often budget routes to Malaga and less frequently Gibraltar airports and heading to one of the many resorts located along the beckoning stretch of Costa del Sol coastline.
Along the coast lies Marbella with its famous marina at Puerto Banus, Estepona, Sotogrande and finally Gibraltar.
The Costa del Sol weather will not disappoint, with average annual temperatures of 18ºC and over 300 days of sunshine per year.
There are around 70 Costa del Sol golf courses on the "Costa del Golf" which offer year round golf as well as a whole range of other activities such as sailing, dolphin safaris, horse riding, scuba diving, etc.
Or why not travel into the real Spain with the cities of Ronda, Cordoba, Seville and Granada all within comfortable reach for day tours. For those with plenty of energy and get up and go, you can also take a 15km trip across the Straits of Gibraltar to visit Tangier in Morocco.
San Pedro de Alcántara is ideally located, just 10 kilometres west from Marbella and a few minutes drive away from the Sierra de Ronda mountain range and 20 km from Estepona. San Pedro is an ancient farming community and still offers and unspoilt pueblo.
The central plaza with parish church and surrounding narrow streets which are packed with intriguing small shops, sidewalk cafes and bars are a must. There is an excellent street market on Thursdays.
Walk from the centre of San Pedro to the beachfront along the Avenida del Marques del Duero an attractive wide avenue with palm trees. The modern wide promenade is great for continuing your walk(or skateboarding!) with several excellent chiringuitos (beachside restaurants) specialising in fish dishes. Bora Bora is a deservedly popular beach club.
San Pedro is host to the last summer fair (feria) in Andalucia during the second week of October.
Estepona remains a popular holiday destination for those who want to be a little further away and still within easy distance of the hustle and bustle of Puerto Banus. Conveniently located on the western Costa del Sol it offers visitors an abundance of attractions.
Estepona offers more than 30 kilometres of carefully maintained sandy beaches. Some of Estepona’s beaches are wild and dramatic, whilst others are tranquil with waterside restaurants (Chiringuitos). With the coast which offers numerous possibilities for water sports, glorious summer temperatures and mild winters it makes for a perfect holiday. There is plenty of history and culture in Estepona which remains unspoiled and future development is carefully planned to ensure the preservation of the town´s cherished identity.
Rada beach is located in front of the town centre and has recently been substantially improved and awarded the European Blue Flag! Worth a visit. It is the longest beach and most popular beach in Estepona.
Or how about the beach at Costa Natura --- the first authorised nudist beach on the Costa del Sol! Cristo's Beach, or "La Playa del Cristo" is sheltered from the winds with an attractive cove.Other beaches include "La Galera" and "Bahía Dorada".
The cuisine in Estepona is distinguished within the traditional offer of Andalusian cuisine by its preference and array of fresh sea produce. Typical dishes in Estepona are "country soup" representing the men who work the land, and "barbecued sardines" which you will find in the popular "moragas" held on the beach. Another typical dish in Estepona is tile-baked sardines, or "sardinas a la teja". Or why not try the prawns, red mullet and octopus widely associated with Estepona cuisine.
All these "marine delicacies" may be savored whilst enjoying the healthy and popular custom of "tapaing" in the typical inns and taverns spread along the streets of the old town centre of Estepona and the Fisherman's Port. |
