OVERVIEW
Narrow passages, streets that are virtually stairways, and little houses washed a gleaming white characterise Monte Sant' Angelo.

The accommodation is within one of the quaint whitewashed dwellings in the Medieval Juno district which contains all the architectural characteristics of an area brimming with history including vaulted ceilings.

Your accommodation in Monte Sant' Angelo has been renovated in traditional style, but contains necessary modern comforts such as central heating, shower, washing machine, gas cooker, TV/DVD.

The apartment is less than 5 mins walk from the town centre, the Basilica, Castle and shops. It has a balcony with fantastic mountaintop view of the sea and valley.

The nearby national park with its dense forests offer beautiful walks in an area famous for orchids, mushrooms as well as deer. The bustling Saturday market is a must for local produce: ham, cheese, wine, honey and herbs.

Monte Sant' Angelo is a fantastic place to relax and spend time, however if you want to explore, from Monte Sant' Angelo you can venture into the Foresta Umbra, a landscape of limes, laurels, and towering yews, populated with foxes and gazelles.

The site of Monte Sant'Angelo, standing on a spur, commands panoramic views of the surrounding terrain. The apartments balcony provides spectacular views.

As you wander about town, look for local shops selling wrought-iron goods, which are among the finest in Italy. Ironwork has a long tradition here, with sons following in their fathers' footsteps. The locals also make wooden furniture and utensils. Most shops are located in Juno, in the centre of town and where your apartment is located.

Monte Sant' Angelo is a place of pilgrimage for Catholics from all over Italy. The town is unspoiled and things have not changed here too much over the centuries.

The accommodation is self-catering, therefore you will need to purchase your vegetables at the greengrocers or the Saturday market, bread is bought at the baker's and meat at the butcher's. When you eat out, each restaurant is unique with its own flavours and charm.

During August and the summer months there is folk dancing, parades, children's entertainment and an outdoor cinema in the town square, but this is a place that can be visited all year round. Every night after dinner the town centre is thronging with residents out on their passeggiata. Sit at one of the bars under the trees, relax and watch life in Italy, seemingly unaffected by the outside world.

The climate is good, the beaches are a short 20 minute drive away.

During the summer it can be a relief returning to the cooler air of the mountain after a day on the beach or a walk in the Foresta Umbra.

For your peace of mind we have efficient and friendly local contacts who will assist you if you experience any problems.

Puglia is the long strip of land, 400km from north to south that makes up the 'heel' of Italy. It was for centuries a strategic province colonized, invaded and conquered by just about every major power of the day, from the Greeks through to the Spanish. As elsewhere in the south of Italy, each ruling dynasty left its own distinctive mark on the landscape and architecture in surviving traces of Roman agricultural schemes and its fortified medieval towns.

Puglia is known for its clean seas and reliable sunshine. Its broad sweep of the Tavoliere plain, flat fertile lands are southern Italy's wheat bowl and the source of the country's best pasta.

The best and one of the least discovered gems in Italy is the Gargano promontory in the north of the province with some of the finest unpolluted sand and sea to be found anywhere in the Adriatic

History
In town, you might want to visit the Sanctuary of San Michele, Via Reale Basilica, built in the Romanesque-Gothic style. The campanile is octagonal, dating from the last years of the 13th century. The sanctuary commemorates the legend of St. Michael, who's said to have left his red cloak after he appeared to some shepherds in a grotto in 490. You can also visit the grotto, to enter from the church, go through bronze doors, made in Constantinople in the 11th century. Crusaders stopped here to worship before going to the Holy Land.
Opposite the campanile is the Tomb of Rotharis, which is said to hold the bones of the king of the Lombards, Rotharis, although it's a baptistry dating from as early as the 12th century.

Continuing past the sanctuary, you'll find the semi-restored ruins of the Norman Swabian Aragonese Castle, although most of the castle dates from later in the Middle Ages. From its ramparts is one of the most sweeping views in the Gargano.

You can also visit the Tancredi Museum in Piazza San Francesco d'Assisi, exhibiting artifacts used by local farmers and vintners in their trades.

Guestbook: Just a quick note to say a big thank you, The apartment is beautiful and Pascale and his daughter are wonderful people very courteous and helpful. The pictures on the website did not prepare us for the wonderful location nor the views from the balcony. I am glad I took my telescope, there was so much to see without leaving the balcony - the sheep with bells on, Manfredonia and the wonderful hairpins!! We both ahd a marvellous time, the locals are lovely people, the restaurants delicious, and the area so very rich in history, and caves and such a variety of countryside and sea side If I had known honeymoons could be so magnificent, I should have had a dozen of them before now....... my new wife has promised me at least two honeymoons a year from now on!! Best regards Tony
