Amalfi was founded around the 4th century AD by refugees fleeing from the barbarian invasions on the coast. Amalfi was initially part of the Byzantine dukedom of Naples. It became an independent Republic in 893. It was ruled by doges and reached the height of its splendour at the end of the 10th century, prospering thanks to trade, navigation and art. In the late Middle Ages Amalfi was an important sea-trading port that maintained relations with Arabs from Africa, Byzantines, Longobards and Normans.
Merchants and sailors from all over the Mediterranean visited Amalfi, and the Amalfi ships provided spices, fabrics and precious stones. The currency used was the Tarì. As a sea-power Amalfi lasted for over 300 years, even when it was finally conquered by the Normans in 1131 and lost its political independence.
Amalfi was the home of famous people in various fields from literature to the arts, science and diplomacy. The most remarkable among them was Flavio Gioia who invented the magnetic compass.
