The private apartment Lessi is located in the very centre of Zagreb, right next to the main city square Trg Bana J. Jelacica. Some buildings around it date back to the 1800s, and there is a variety of architectural styles in the neighbourhood- from Classicism and Secession to Modernism.
The oldest building on the square, at num. 15, dates from 1827. By arriving to the main square, one encounters many legends obout the origin of the town's name. One of them says that Zagreb got its name by a chance meeting at the place of this square, when a viceroy called out to a girl standing near the well: "Manduso, ZAGRABI vode!" (Mandusa, scoop some water!) That is how the well came to be known as Mandusevac, and the town-Zagreb.
The word Zagreb, however, means a trench, or a ditch..
