Le Morne Travel Guide

Le Morne Local History

Situated on the southwest of the island Le Morne is an isolated rocky mountain and peninsula. The village has steadily grown but is nothing in comparison to towns like Port Louis or Grand Baie. One of the first hotels was built in 1947 and although over the years many more hotels have been erected this area and although the wilderness has gone it is still very exclusive.

The Le Morne Mountain is probably the most famous in the area as according to history, runaway slaves made their way up the mountain so that they would not be found and recaptured. They built a wooden bridge so they could come up and down and it would be removed once everyone had reached the hideout. When slavery was abolished an expedition made their way to the mountain to advise the slaves of the new ruling. Unfortunately the slaves misunderstood the intentions and promptly jumped off the mountain to their deaths, just so they would not be enslaved again.
