Location & area
Tilcara, considered the Archaeological Capital of the Argentine Northwest (NorOeste Argentino: NOA) for the great quantity of objects remaining in its subsoil, is the head-board of the department of the same name. Located to 2.465 meters over sea level it has, according to the official census of 2001, approximately 7.000 inhabitants who occupy its 12 hectares of surface.
The village of Tilcara is embraced by two rivers: the Rio Grande and the Huasamayo.
As many other populations of the Argentine north, Tilcara does not have a date of foundation. The whole Humahuaca's Gorge was populated by indigenous settlements, ever since the preincaica time. When the Inca empire arrived to the region, the zone where nowadays the village of Tilcara grows and lives, used to belong to the Kollasuyo: name given to the southern province of the incaico world. But this organization did not last much: approximately 50 years later Spaniards arrived.
There exist indications of human presence in the region dated on more than 10.000 years. Omaguacas, uquías, fiscaras and tilcaras were some of the indigenous tribes who were populating the zone between 1000 and 1480 of our age. Spaniards, headed by the captain Francisco de Argañaraz y Murguía, managed to conquer the aboriginal resistance newly in 1598. After the conquest, these villages were submitted to the regime of commission, being forced to reside in a certain place and to work for seasons.
Still today, in excavations realized in Tilcara's full center,-in order to build new constructions-, there take place important archaeological finds that date back, in general, of the sixteen century. Some of these objects remain in the village, exhibited in the places where they were found. They testimony that the past left in the tilcareño subsoil is an essential issue in the ordinary life of this town inhabitants, so nobody forgets that here, history is an every day matter.
