Important Notice : Avoiding Fraud
It's rare, but some helpful hints to watch out for with regards to fraud:
- It is important to NEVER wire funds or use/employ other fund transfer mechanisms such as western union: Always use a credit card to protect yourself against fraud. If owners pressure you into providing a deposit or refuse to accept credit cards, there is a high probability that this is a scam.
- If at all suspicious of fraud, ask to see their website, or any other literature they can provide or send to you. Ask them for contact details for guests who have previously stayed on their property insisting on telephone numbers. Be suspicious of emails that originate from free email services (yahoo, hotmail, gmail, etc)
- Research the property thoroughly on the internet to see if there is any history or mention of scams associated with the property.

We emailed back and forth for approx 6 day's with the response time from Alfred Furnished Apartment's getting longer and longer. On the 29th August I confirmed via email that I wanted to go ahead and book the apartment we had been speaking about (370 St Johns Street Toronto) however the web site was extremely unclear in it's details as to how to complete a booking (every place is listed at $500, there is no clear explanation that this is a deposit and how/when to pay the balance).
I heard nothing from Alfred Furnished Apartment's for a whole 2 day's. When they finally contacted me they advised that I 'to make the reservation we need a $500 deposit. This can be paid by credit card by PayPal or by money order to Ernest Alfred by Western Union and sending them the transaction number or by bank transfer and we can provide you with the banking information. The balance can be paid the same way before arrival or in cash or certified cheque on arrival.'
The person I had been emailing (Ernest Alfred) was well aware that I would be travelling from Australia, therefore did not have the option of paying via certified cheque (as I do not have a Canadian Bank Account). I wanted to pay via PayPal on their web site however one of the required fields is the state/province that you live in. When completing the details I was given the option to change the country to Australia, but it would not provide me with the option to select either a blank space or the correct State from Australia, therefore every time I tried to complete the order page it would tell me that whatever 'state' is showing from the drop down box was not a valid state from Australia and I couldn't continue.
I wrote back to Ernest Alfred and advised him of the issue and blatantly asked "How do people not originally from the USA or Canada normally complete their orders?" I also looked into completing the order via western union money transfer, however this would have cost an additional $100 in fee's, so I couldn't understand why I should be forced to pay this additional money just because of an issue with the Alfred Apartment web site.
I waited all day again to hear back as to how to resolve this issue, finally at approx 10pm that night I received an email stating "Unfortunately 370 St. Johns has just been rented and thus are no longer available."
So despite the fact that I emailed confirmation of my intent to rent this apartment 4 DAYS BEFOREHAND they have chosen it's too hard to actually address the issue or acknowledge my booking and I have now been forced into a position where I am again trying to locate budget accommodation in Toronto, for my arrival in 2 weeks time, in September (Film Festival Month). Thanks for nothing Ernest!
