Location & area

From the south shore and South Bay of Lake Nipissing, the South River winds five kilometers to Chapman's Chute and to Nipissing Township.

Surveyed in the late 1870s and incorporated in 1888, the village of Nipissing was the earliest and largest commercial centre in the district for a period before the turn of the century. Today there are less than 100 people in the Village itself, with a population density of four persons per square km. But there once were two hotels, a blacksmith shop, a school, two churches, a mill and a wagon shop.
