Overview
ST. GEORGE'S What do you do when you have one of the best kept secrets in the Western Newfoundland? Well, you try to get the word out.
And that's exactly what Patsy Rancourt, owner-operator of The Palace Inn here, is now doing.
They have carried out an incredible job of bringing a century old building up to modern day standards yet retaining the old style wherever possible.
Built during the turn of the 19th Century by Bishop Neil McNeil, their beautiful two storey historical house which once accommodated Bishops and Priests has been transformed into a beautiful facility called The Palace Inn.
Patsy has childhood memories of growing up in St. George's of the big beautiful house they referred to as the palace and wanted to keep that name. Located just off Main Street at 2 School Lane next to the town hall and St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, the full length second storey balcony at the inn provides a beautiful view of the bay and Sandy Point.
The Rancourt's purchased the building on May 11, 2006 and went right into renovations, trying to keep it as original as possible but meeting all the regulations as set out. They installed old style new windows, redid the moldings to the character of the times and completely rewired and put new plumbing in the facility.
As well, all the rooms are fitted with telephones, cable television and internet service. They as well filled the house with antiques so that guest can come and sleep in a bed from the 1800's and marvel over the other period furniture, including a large spinning wheel.
It was on Aug. 13 this year that they received a four star ranking for the facility. Four and five star accommodations under the Canada Select system are exceptional properties offering extensive or outstanding facilities and services.
And the Rancourt's say they provide just such services with a full breakfast included with every room. They are prepared to cater to anything, from a wedding to a romantic getaway.
Complete with two full size master suites with Jacuzzi tub; five regular rooms with full private baths, dining and sitting area, The Palace Inn has everything to offer for your comfort and convenience.
Whether it's just to relax with friends or to spend a night or two in one of the luxurious rooms, you will be treated like Royalty at The Palace.
They expressed their appreciation to the Town of St. George's for their cooperation and support during the rebuilding of The Place Inn as well as to the workers who help create their dream.

Important Notice : Avoiding Fraud
It's rare, but some helpful hints to watch out for with regards to fraud:
- It is important to NEVER wire funds or use/employ other fund transfer mechanisms such as western union: Always use a credit card to protect yourself against fraud. If owners pressure you into providing a deposit or refuse to accept credit cards, there is a high probability that this is a scam.
- If at all suspicious of fraud, ask to see their website, or any other literature they can provide or send to you. Ask them for contact details for guests who have previously stayed on their property insisting on telephone numbers. Be suspicious of emails that originate from free email services (yahoo, hotmail, gmail, etc)
- Research the property thoroughly on the internet to see if there is any history or mention of scams associated with the property.
