Location & area
Bauhaus is an architectural style named for the German Art and Design School founded in Weimar in 1919 and closed by the Nazi regime in 1933.
The style represented a modern school of design with the accent on a rational approach in planning and a social attitude to architecture. The teachers and students who escaped from Germany spread their ideas throughout the United States, Britain, South America and pre-State Israel.
During this period, the modernist movement in art reached its peak in Europe and at that time too the city of Tel Aviv developed rapidly. The city's population expanded, mainly through the influx of immigrants from Germany, following the rise of the Hitler regime. This influx, called 'The German Immigration,' brought not only capital but also the influence of the trends in art and architecture from Europe. Architects such as Arieh Sharon and Yaakov Rechter who studied at the Bauhaus school were influenced by the creations of Le Corbusier and Eric Mendelsohn, and they designed numerous buildings in this style.
The Bauhaus style is characterized by their largely cubic structure with rounded corners and distinctive sweeping balconies. They have no ornamentations that are not functional.
