Its defiantly worth the steep walk up if only to see the panoramic city views of the castle, Holyrood, The Firth of Forth, the New town, Arthur's seat and Princes street. On the top stands the famous unfinished acropolis designed by William Playfair, the old observatory designed by James Craig (1792) and the city Observatory built in 1818 which has exhibitions and viewings of the night sky.
The Beltane Fire Festival is held the first of May every year on Calton hill. The Hill is also one of the best places to watch the Edinburgh castle fireworks display.
