Location & area

ABOUT THE ISLE OF CUMBRAE: Set in the Firth of Clyde only a ten-minute ferry ride from Largs it is undeniably the Clyde’s best-kept secret. Whether you are a family, a couple or just taking time out on your own, the Isle of Cumbrae is a magical place enabling you to relax and have fun throughout your stay. Your holiday can be as relaxing or as varied as you want it to be.

Family Fun: For many years the Isle of Cumbrae has been a family-oriented island, offering plenty of things to do for all ages: popular attractions include fishing, outdoor bowls, putting, crazy golf, amusements and a children’s playground. Alternatively you could visit our aquarium cited next to the University of Marine Biology at Keppel. As well as fishing trips, you could take a boat trip around the Little Cumbrae; or sail out on the last ocean-going paddle steamer ‘the Waverley’ which pays regular visits to the docks at the main pier in Millport. If none of this tickles your fancy just while-away the hours in the island's town¬ of ‘Millport’ and enjoy the beautiful white sandy beaches.

Active: For the more adventurous hire a bike and cycle the 12 miles of road around the island, stopping off at Fintry Bay for coffee, lunch or afternoon tea. Water-sports enthusiasts can go windsurfing or dinghy sailing. Keen walkers have interesting walks especially for those interested in wildlife and bird watching all over the island. At the top of the island golfers will find an 18-hole golf course which offers stunning panoramic views of the Firth of Clyde as you play your round.

Music: During the summer season we have classical concerts in the island's cathedral of the isles (the smallest cathedral in the Scottish western isles). In August, Millport holds a Country & Western extravaganza for one and all – not to be missed!

Tourist Information: visit the newly refurbished Garrison where all information on tourism and the island's museum and library can be found, you can glean a lot of useful information about what the island has to offer you as a visitor.

Important Notice : Avoiding Fraud

It's rare, but some helpful hints to watch out for with regards to fraud:

  • It is important to NEVER wire funds or use/employ other fund transfer mechanisms such as western union: Always use a credit card to protect yourself against fraud. If owners pressure you into providing a deposit or refuse to accept credit cards, there is a high probability that this is a scam.
  • If at all suspicious of fraud, ask to see their website, or any other literature they can provide or send to you. Ask them for contact details for guests who have previously stayed on their property insisting on telephone numbers. Be suspicious of emails that originate from free email services (yahoo, hotmail, gmail, etc)
  • Research the property thoroughly on the internet to see if there is any history or mention of scams associated with the property.
