About Wool Cottage

Wool Cottage dates from about 1860 and is located in St John's Street just outside the city walls near the East Gate - the original road out of the city to the east.

Conservation Area - a square mile of interesting character property that offers a lifestyle further enhanced by its proximity to the renowned Chesil Rectory, St John's Church, Winchester City Mill, River Itchen and The Pilgrim's Way to Canterbury which is 120 miles long.

Chesil Rectory dates from 1459 and sits on Chesil Street which is a derivative of Cheese Hill Street (cheese is Anglo Saxon for gravel).

St John's Church yard contains one of few catalogued Sarsen Stones - natural sandstone blocks left after the last ice age relatively rare, these stones were much sought after as markers, bollards to protect buildings, or foundation stones.

Winchester City Mill is located on a site used for milling flour since Saxon times the name city mill came into being after queen Mary Tudor gave it to the city in 1554 following her wedding to Philip of Spain in the cathedral.

The Pilgrim's Way. After the murder of Thomas Becket - (who fell out with King Henry 2nd in 1170) it became popular with the people who believed that if they touched his grave it would cure them of any illnesses
The River Itchen is one of the best chalk streams in the world visitors can escape the bustle of the city centre and take a leisurely walk along its banks. The river is home to many varieties of protected species such as otters and is famous for its trout and the watercress beds which lie in its flood plain.

We acquired the property in May 2006 as part of our City Centre Cottage Collection. It's excellent location, first class accommodation of contemporary fusion and period charm in a 'city style' is what makes Wool Cottage such a special place to be. making it an excellent self catering holiday home.
