Overview

Cygnet Lodge is well placed to allow the visitor easy access to a wealth of places to visit and sights to see. The house stands in grounds of 5 acres with its own brook and an ancient moated area which is now covered in woodland around which our guests are invited to wander as they wish. Further afield, the following is a small sample of what is on offer - please follow the links to other sites of interest....

Hanley Swan is a classic, beautiful English village with its village green, Oak tree, Swan Pool, pub, village stores and butcher's shop all within a hundred yards of each other.

Locally, Malvern and Upton-on-Severn are within 3 miles and offer very different environments: Malvern is famous for its 8 mile range of granite hills which are said to have inspired Elgar's Enigma Variations. Continuing the Elgar theme, his birthplace can be found at Broadheath just 8 miles north and his grave is situated in the grounds of St. Wulstan's church at Malvern Wells. Morgan motor cars are still hand made here (output is 11 per week!) and tours of the factory can be arranged - however, please telephone them before visiting! Adjacent to its Winter Gardens, the town of Great Malvern boasts a fine and recently renovated theatre hall complex which offers plays, films and concerts all year 'round. The Three Counties Showground is just over a mile from Cygnet Lodge and hosts many different exhibitions and shows throughout the year.

Upton-on-Severn has become famous for staging a very large Jazz festival at the end of June each year - acts flock from all over Europe to perform here and the atmosphere is truly magnificent - the streets are closed and a real carnival atmosphere pervades the whole weekend. Also held at Upton are various folk festivals and a water festival whose climax is a stupendous firewaorks display alongside the river. The nearby village of Welland plays host to a big steam rally at the end of July, annually.

The Cotswold Hills with their honey-gold stone towns and villages such as Broadway, Stow on the Wold and Burford are all within easy reach to the east. To the south is Tewkesbury with its magnificent Abbey, once part of a Benedictine Monastery which dates from the 12th Century. Further afield is the Regency Spa town of Cheltenham and close to its neighbour, Gloucester, can be found a fine example of a Roman Villa.

Travelling west, the visitor can find untouched gems such as the market towns of Hereford, Ledbury and Ross-on-Wye. Hereford retains much of its ancient charm and from there the Welsh hills and Brecon Beacons are but a short trip.

Looking to the north, Worcester with its fine Cathedral (burial place of King John) is the gateway to the Midlands. Despite its dark and grimy history, modern Birmingham is well worth a visit, amongst other things to discover the 'hidden' canal system in the city centre.

To the north-west is a string of interesting towns lying along the Severn valley – Kidderminster, Bewdley, Bridgnorth, Ironbridge, Telford and Shrewsbury, all of which have played their part in the story of England's industrial revolution. Bewdley is well worth a visit for a 'live steam' ride on 15 miles of the Severn Valley Railway.
