Location & area
The Region: (Costa Blanca, Alicante)
You will find Gran Alacant in the Costa Blanca region. The White Coast as it is translated is distinguished by its great white sandy beaches and lively resorts, running along the coast from Denia way up in the north passing through Alicante and continuing south to Torrevieja and beyond
Centrally located, it is an ideal place from which to explore the wide-ranging Valencian region. With Alicante as your closest city, other surrounding well known towns are Benidorm and Calpe to the north, and La Marina and Torrevieja to the south. The nearest local town to Gran Alacant is Santa Pola.
Alicante boasts some of the best beaches on the Costa Blanca. Official sources have declared Spanish beaches as the most environmentally healthy in Europe. With an impressive array of Blue Flag Awards under its belt, it is not difficult to see why Spain and most notably the Costa Blanca have been voted the best of the best. Amidst some of the services like parasols for hire, life saving, first aid facilities and toilets, you will also find that the majority of these beaches are wheelchair accessible.
Bang on the centre of the city at the end of Alicantes famous promenade you will find the playa del Postiguet, or better still - the locals beach resort. Conveniently close to the marina and the centre, it is not surprising that this beach is very popular in spite of the always hectic parking facilities. Just a little north and considered one of Alicantes best beaches is la playa de San Juan. Bordered by a long promenade leading to Campello and lined with bars, restaurants and ice cream parlours as far as the eye can see, this vast, soft white sandy beach runs into yet another one of Alicante great beaches - Platja Muchavista.
If snorkeling is your thing, then Cabo de la Huerta is the beach for you! You are not however limited to this one beach. Traveling south away from Alicante in the direction of Gran Alacant is Platja de Babel - an equally good beach to snorkel in and fish from its shore.
A mere 5 miles from Alicante centre and one of the closest beaches to Gran Alacant (2min drive) is Los Arenales Del Sol. Our photos dont do it justice is the usual commentary of our guests. This typical Spanish seaside resort is the summer home of locals from nearby inland towns like Elche. Beach shops, bars and restaurants boasting stunning sea views line the recently extended promenade. This lovely beach runs into the gorgeous, dune backed Carabasi beach. And if you consider white bits unflattering, then bare all right here as part of the beach here is a nudist beach! On the other hand, I guess I can only say Youve been warned! Further south and approaching the near by town of Santa Pola from the East, you will find further wonderful beaches and all within an easy and flat walk away from the shops, bars and restaurants.
The Town:
Gran Alacant can offer you the best of both worlds. Those looking for a relaxing holiday lounging by the pool, a bit of tennis for exercise and a quiet meal in the near by restaurant are well catered for. There is however plenty to do for those looking for something a bit more active or fun. The excellent motorway network ensures that near by surrounding areas and attractions are not sorrowfully missed. There is so much to do! A nifty 40 minutes away by car (just outside of Benidorm) is Terra Mitica, a theme park to be enjoyed by both adults and kids alike. In Benidorm, nestling in one of its hills is the superb fun packed water park Aqualandia which is next to Mundomar the sea life centre.
Although nightlife in Gran Alacant is quite low key, it is by no means lifeless. Numerous bars and restaurants (and more on the way) constantly entertain those who are quite happy to enjoy good food and a great bottle of wine. And for variety you may want to try some tapas or even dinning at one of Santa Polas best restaurants Moniatos and Polamar. On the other hand, the near by city of Alicante (15 mins) has a bustling night life catering for every taste.
Amidst all the facilities and services in the area you will find; supermarkets, banks (with cash dispensers), Video/DVD rental, car rental, petrol station and even a local street market. And although we hope you will not need them, you will find doctors surgery, pharmacy and opticians.
A stones throw from Gran Alacant, less than a mile down the hill, is the above mentioned Los Arenales del Sol beach. The beach is never empty. Even in the our winter you find people running or walking by the shore. And although the beach is prepared for the Easter Break it is in the height of summer that all types of water sports become available. If your priority is a healthy tan, then a few trips to Los Arenales beach is definitely a must!
Lastly, although worthy of mention is the fact that the short distance to the airport makes Gran Alacant a specifically good holiday base. You can be in your holiday rental accommodation in less than 15 mins from landing! And I hear you say Aircraft noise? No problemo Gran Alacant is not on the flight path!
