Location & area
Competa is a beautiful white washed village with approximately 4,000 inhabitants, nestled below the Tejeda and Almijara mountain ranges, located at an altitude of 2,000 feet, about a 25 minute drive from the coastal motorway and the beaches of Torrox Costa and Algarrobo Costa. The larger towns of Torre del Mar, Nerja, and Velez-Malaga are a 30 minute drive away, and the airport at Malaga approximately 1 hour. Competa is best known to many for it's locally produced wine, both dry and sweet which is both plentiful and cheap. One of the most popular annual fiestas is the 'Noche del Vino' on the 15th August featuring programmes of flamenco music and dance, plus free sampling of the local vino and the traditional 'migas' to eat. There is also the annual 'feria' at the end of July, when locals and visitors really let their hair down in a real party atmosphere. The area is particularly popular with the British, Scandinavians, Germans and Dutch, and the steady influx of foreigners has proved positive overall for the locals in helping to slow down the former migration of young people to the cities and coast.
The area is a favourite with walkers from all over the world. Competa is now a self-sufficient and thriving mountain village, centred around the Plaza Almijara, dominated by it's magnificent 16th Century church. The bustling square is one of the best locations to enjoy a drink or meal and people watch. The village is fascinating to explore with its labyrinth of narrow, cobbled streets dating back to Moorish times, yet it can provide virtually all the essential services required for daily life. There are a large number of restaurants and bars, some of them extremely good, more than a dozen supermarkets, banks, hardware & DIY stores, furniture and white goods, paper shops with international press, post office, tourist office and gift shops. You will also find primary and secondary schools, doctor, dentist and veterinary services, pharmacies, police stations, language schools, internet cafe and a full range of tradesmen, both English and Spanish, to cater for your every need.

Important Notice : Avoiding Fraud
It's rare, but some helpful hints to watch out for with regards to fraud:
- It is important to NEVER wire funds or use/employ other fund transfer mechanisms such as western union: Always use a credit card to protect yourself against fraud. If owners pressure you into providing a deposit or refuse to accept credit cards, there is a high probability that this is a scam.
- If at all suspicious of fraud, ask to see their website, or any other literature they can provide or send to you. Ask them for contact details for guests who have previously stayed on their property insisting on telephone numbers. Be suspicious of emails that originate from free email services (yahoo, hotmail, gmail, etc)
- Research the property thoroughly on the internet to see if there is any history or mention of scams associated with the property.
