Pool by night (Child security fence) Kids Room (with a View!) Master Bedroom (Air-con, En suite) Roman Bridge (Old Town) Lounge (Air-con) Patio

Overview

This large (250sqm/2700sqft) detached four bedroom, three bathroom Tavira villa is fully tiled with large lounge, large kitchen/dining room, several terraces, private pool 11x5m (36x16ft) separated from the patio by a child security fence. There are two double bedrooms (one en suite and air-con, one with fan) and two twin bedrooms (both with fan). The villa is tastefully furnished and comprehensively equipped (indoors and outdoors) to cater for max eight guests. Cable and Satellite TV (BBC, ITV, etc) is provided, also DVD, CD, etc. WiFi broadband internet access is included. The lounge (~450sqft) and dining room are both air-conditioned. The lounge has 2 x 3-seater and 2 x 2-seater couches Kitchen and dining room are separate; an open-plan arrangement results in a bright and airy setting. There is a wrap-around marble-tiled terrace, part of which off the kitchen is roofed against the summmer sun; there is also a large roof terrace with panoramic views over Roman Bridge, old town, Algarve Hills and out to sea. All windows in the villa (other than in the bathrooms) are equipped with shutters to guard against the sun in the summer heat.
While smoking is not permitted indoors, there are 8 sliding doors on the ground floor to the wrap-around terrace and each bedroom has a sliding door to a small balcony. Cleaning and linen each 6 to 8 days, towels each 3 to 4 days. Off road parking is available. Both the pool and the patio area are provided with ample garden furniture; the child security fence will be a boon to families with small children. Two terraces also are furnished.
While a car may be desirable, it is not necessary. A footpath at the back of the villa leads to the Roman Bridge (the centre point of the old town) in 6 to 8 minutes walk. Taxis are plentiful and relatively inexpensive in Tavira (~Euro4 in town). There are regular express buses serving the towns along the Algarve but also Seville and Lisbon. There is also a commuter train serving the coastal towns and connecting to the Faro to Lisbon express -- again, very inexpensive.
The ~8 miles/13km of beaches on Tavira Island are reached by ferry or by a small train over a causeway (it's like something in a kids cartoon!). There is even a remote, secluded nudist beach.
Tavira is still an active fishing port and boasts many good and inexpensive restaurants (and, unlike Spain, Portuguese restaurants serve dinner from ~19h00/7.00pm). There is a marked absence of the lager louts and disco bars which plague so many other resort towns -- but there are two good discos!
For the golfer, there are seven courses within 5 to 25 mins (Benamor, Quinta da Cima, Quinta da Ria, Monte Rei, Castro Marim, Maragota, Quinta Vale, etc); travel one hour and you have almost all of the Algarve courses available to you plus Islantilla, Isla da Canela, etc over the border in Spain.
Tavira is surrounded by the Ria Formosa Nature Reserve which abounds in flora, fauna, lepidoptera, etc. You can also go cycling or horseriding there. There is kayaking on the river in Tavira, surfing off Tavira Island, boat hire for sea fishing, etc.
For sightseeing, you have the Algarve Hills at the back of Tavira or the many fortified towns of the Guadiana Valley which forms the border between Portugal and Spain (the border is 20miles/30km from Tavira).
Right through the summer, the Camara (town council) organises fairs, exhibitions, street theatre, folk music and dancing, a film festival, etc -- the town buzzes up to midnight and beyond.
While the the villa can comfortably accommodate eight guests, discounts up to 20% apply for smaller parties from September to June -- please enquire. A 5% discount applies for a stay of two weeks, 7.5%% for three weeks. Book 2009 before Dec 31, 2008, and you qualify for a additional 5% "Early Bird" discount.
The property is managed by an English couple who live locally and who are on call should any emergency arise.
