Location & area

Visit Alfama is to visit the architecture, sounds and smells of old Lisbon. This is one of the most typical quarters of Lisbon. In its narrow winding streets you will find the hidden treasure of Alfama and on its steep stairs you can breathe the soul of Lisbon.

In Alfama, you can still see traces of Roman and Arabic, two of the most dominant civilizations in the past of Lisbon. The narrow streets, the result of Muslim culture, guided by individualistic rules that public spaces are not important. These streets are a mark of the Koran, where little value is given to facades in the interiors of the homes, which is much appreciated.

Alfama once home to the unlucky, delinquents or ungrateful and due to its proximity to the sea, was also many sailors home.

Rebuilt by local people after the earthquake of 1755, Alfama was to be demolished, which fortunately has not happened since this part of town was considered a living history book, where the past mingles with the present.
