Willem de Kooning (1904 ? 1997)

Willem de Kooning was a leading Dutch abstract expressionist painter. After completing his study at the Rotterdam Academy of Fine Art, he stowed away on a ship bound for America.

In the 1930s, de Kooning developed his famous abstract style: heightened colours and geometric abstractions. In 1980 he was diagnosed with Alzheimer?s disease and his popularity soared. At auction in 1989, one of paintings, Interchange (1955), sold for USD 20.6 million. De Kooning was awarded the National Medal of Arts in 1985, the highest honour given to artists in the United States.
